At the time, I thought I was going "middle of the road". Not the totally newbie route (disposables, ego twists, etc.) but not the more serious equipment. I don't feel as if I necessarily made a mistake starting w/ the itaste kit. But...if you're the kind of person who likes to tinker, hack, rip things apart and build things (whcih I have always been), then there's no point in starting too low down the scale. I just didn't know if I'd like vaping at all, so while I had a feeling that *IF* I liked it I would eventually get the equipment tat you see the more experienced vapers using, I just wasn't prepared to go that route right from the start. It's only been 2 months. I will likely get the more hardcore stuff soon. Got a mini pt2 last week - built my first coils. Simple. Now I've got an IGO-S on the way and I'll get an RBA soon too. Just for kicks, I even ordered my first pack of cartos to see what they're like (I'm thinking they might be perfect for sticking in a pocket and taking walks along w/ a mini ego battery). For $5, it's worth a shot. If they aren't too bad, perhaps a carto tank as well.
Overall, I agree with ape.in.future and schuff. While I like the battery I have, and it has a lot of nice features, it just doesn't have the power range (nor the diameter) that after only 2 months I already want.
In hindsight, the main thing I didn't understand was *HOW* I was going to vape. My routine. The process. At the beginning, you're focused on whether or not it'll be an adequate substitute for analogs. Will you like vaping? What do you need to do it? Then you realize that you don't vape like you smoked. Two different animals. Similar in some ways - but quite different in others. I was too focused on "what to get", i.e. specs, compatibility, prices, etc. What I couldn't see then is that HOW the equipment would be used is more important. An RDA is perfect for one type of routine, but throwables might be best for someone else. You have to fit the equipment to what will become your vaping "style".
So my advice to a newbie would be to really give it some thought as to HOW you are going to vape. Where will you do it (home, work, car...)? How often? Is it a nicotine fix and/or do you enjoy the actual smoke going in and out? When will you vape? Do you travel a lot (for work or pleasure)? Women usually carry purses with them - it's easier to port around a few items. When the weather is warmer, I go for long walks without any jacket pockets or bags. I used to stick a mini bic in a flip-top cig box and just tuck it into my jeans back pocket. Not going to do that with a provari and a big tank!
Last, as far as nicotine content goes, all the sites said that 12mg was the equivalent of lights. But the first 12mg vaping knocked my head off. I ordered 6mg after that. Because I'd rather vape more frequently than I smoked (especially since I now do it inside my home whereas I didn't smoke in my home), a lower mg makes sense. Then I ordered 9mg. But there are days when I'll vape about twice the amount that I used to smoke (just 5 cigs/day). In addition, when you're building coils and testing them, you vape much more than usual. I'm going back to 6mg next order. Thus, I suggest a newbie start with a lower nicotine level that the sites recommend, but more importantly that he or she order different nicotine levels of the same and/or different ejuices right from the start. That way, you'll be flexible and find your sweet spot quickly.
What was the question again?
