Hello all,

I got my first rda the other day and have been frustrated so far. Apparently there is a hole in my theory on construction. I had planned to do a pair of micro coils on top of cotton, but some very nasty dry hits from a cotton lined SS mesh setup have me leery of chasing after cotton. What I settled on was a 2mm diameter piece of ecowool wrapped with 32ga kanthal. About six wraps per coil was enough to get me close (about 1.8Ω per coil) but when attempting to glow the coils it took a VERY long time to get anything resembling orange. Connections were secure.

Do I need to go higher on the ohms (to reach the 1.3 cutoff on my VW device) and max out the watts on my regulated device? Do I need smaller diameter wicking and therefore smaller coil? Is micro/cotton the only way to go with these? I did see a video were a guy was running a dual coil setup at .4Ω, but I do not have any desire to blow myself up and so was aiming for about .8 to 1Ω.

I believe that these air holes will need to be drilled out as they are very small to begin with. On my Gennys, I prefer about a 1.2mm. What size do you recommend I drill out each of the two air holes?

I recommend doing both holes at 1.2mm or 3/64in. I have two top caps for mine. I prefer the 3/64th one over the dual 1/16th hole.

For making dual coils I have found 28 or 30 gauge easier for my MVP2 (also vw device) They warm up faster. I make both of them around 2.5 ohms and keep the center leg untrimmed. Set the volts for 3.4 (low rating) Then, after checking the ohms, pulse it a few times . You will notice one of the coils heating alot faster and brighter then the other. Ill then loosen the center screw slightly and pull the opposite coil leg shorter; tighten; pulse; and repeat until the both are truly going at the same time. Then thread my wick through.

Now Ill set it to watts and increase to taste. I do believe it need the slightly higher ohm coil for the cutoff then a dual 2.0 ohm

Hope this helps

Im using cotton as a wick and my coils usually are wrapped on a micro screwdriver (just smaller then 1/16th) which i use to tighten the screws.
Yes they will be about 10 wraps. but keep everything really close and tight (almost touching) IT helps with the heating up process. And coil legs are ok. With this style coil the legs do not get hot at all.

In order to take advantage of the capabilities of a micro coil you want them all to be touching, no gaps what-so-ever. In order to accomplish that, dry burn the coil til it is orange, release the fire button and carefully squeeze the coil from end to end with a pair of needle nose pliers while the coil cools down. Repeat a few few times until it is one solid uniformly touching coil.

You will find a quicker more uniform heat up of the entire coil when they are solid touching, and will perform better than a lower Ω coil of non touching wraps.

Micro coils work well using 8-10 wraps. If the resistance is not where you want it, change wire gauge to achieve target Ω achievable in 8-10 wraps. Too few and the coil to wick contact area is too small, too many and either it can take too long to heat up, or can vaporize juice (in the center) quicker than it can be wicked.

I use 28g for single coils and 30g for dual. I'll never use 32g again for any reason as there is no situation where it can deliver equal or better performance for any of my set ups.

I could not get cotton to lay in the coil right so I ended up with a two four wraps of 30ga @.7Ω

eco sucked when I tried it with micros, pretty much all dry hits. I build mine on a 5/64 drill bit. my single coil set up has teh hole drilled out to 2 mm and the dual set up has 2, 2mm holes. I have tried cotton under teh coil and peaches and cream cotton yarn through it and much prefer the cotton through the coil. for my single I do 6 wraps which gives me .7ohm and for the dual I did 8 wraps and came to .7 or .8
