Atomizer (normal atomizer - not tank atomizer) can be used with a 510 or Ego cartridge (depends on the girth of the atomizer) made of plastic and stuffing (probably the most inconsistent way to vape - need topping off often, can leak a lot at once). Carts usually work best with standard resistance atomizers and may melt with hotter LR atomizers

Normal atomizer can also be used with a drip tip - instead of a plastic and stuffing cart. A drip tip is a mouthpiece with a wider hole that can be attached to a normal non-tank atomizer - then you drip several drops of juice in and vape it and drip more in and vape it etc. Some people like this and it can give great flavor and vapor, others have problems with burning tastes and the repetitive need to drip in liquid. Also obviously not good while driving etc. Dripping can be done with standard resistance and on batteries >400mah with the hotter low resistance atomizers. (LR items are not for use on slim ecig batteries). Atomizers are also available in HR for high voltage mods.

Cartomizer is a combined disposable atomizer and cart, The atomizer is built into the inside along with the stuffing and wicks. Some reservoir-type cartos need a syringe to fill and have no stuffing. Cartos screw right onto the battery. Cartos come in standard resistance for any battery size and LR (low resistance) for the 400mah+ batteries (hotter, use charge faster, probably use juice faster). They also come in HR for high voltage mods. I find if I use thin clear juices with cartomizers I can usually get a week's good use or more out of a carto (since I use a pair and alternate that is 2 weeks or more out of a pair).

I believe more experienced vapers prefer cartomizers over any of the other vaping methods. I would bet dripping is second, then tanks, then atomizer + cart. Dripping on a manual battery and atomizer is probably the most popular way to test juices.

I've been vaping for almost a year with an ego. Tried a "tank" type but got zero point zero zero throat hit so gave up on that. What is a drop type? What is a cartomizer? Is there a page with a list of the various vaping types and explanation of how each one works?

From the Devil's Vaping Dictionary:

Drop Type (n.) - Synonym Atomizer (n.) - A device, for e-cigs, usually metal, with a heating coil used to heat the juice. Used for Dripping, hence "Drop Type". The insidious nature of this device is that it has a metal wick (See Bridge) and a plastic cart with filler. The user is duped into thinking that the cart+filler+wick will actually function, thus causing failure and probably premature atty death. Dripping avoids the whole cart+wick issue by dropping e-juice directly into the atomizer and is usually problem free (although more laborious).

Dripping (v) - the easiest way to avoid problems, although a bit more laborious than cartos. Dripping 3 drops into an atomizer and vaping until it needs more, then repeating ad infinitum.

Cartomizer (n.) - Another insidious device, even more cleaver than the Drop Type. It is designed to maximize e-juice waste by tricking the user into filling several milliliters of e-juce into it and then promptly dieing. Other tricks include cracking, burning, and leaking. These issues are mitigated (in perception only) by the manufacturers who regularly come out with "new" designs every month or so to dupe frustrated users into thinking that a better solution may exist.

    in a cave, eh?
If you want to max the hit on your Ego, start with a LR 306 atomizer and 306 drip tip. You'll get maximum throat hit from a pure PG liquid (but you might prefer to go 80% PG/20% VG or a 70/30 mix). And if you're vaping 24mg, that's probably about as good as it gets.

But for convenience, you may prefer SmokTech dual-coil or Boge LR cartomizers. Although, you'll maximize vapor and flavor by dripping, you might not want to be constantly reaching for your juice.

Dripping is still good for testing flavors or getting that strong hit when you feel you really need one.

And then your next step would be to look at stepping up to a 5-volt, battery stacker (3v, 3.7, 6v or 7.4v), or a variable-volt mod.

PS. The Ego-T standard tank atomizers give off almost no flavor, so just going to low-resistance tank atomizers or cartomizers will improve right there.

cartomizers sound interesting but I dont like the idea of having to replace every week or so. I seem to get a few months out of each standard atomizer on my ego and thats vaping 2mls a day (24mg) strength. I'm happy with it, just need to fluff the filling occasionally.
Sounds like drip tips are the way to go for the best all round result but I might like it too much and then I'd be stuck with the hassle of dripping all the time.
I'm going to try an LR atty in my ego and see how that goes.
Thanks for all the advice and tips!

Depending on how you use your catomizer you can get more than a week or two use from them. With cleaning they can last almost as long as an atomizer but many people just forgo the hassle of cleaning and replace them.
