I was rolling my own with ultra-thin paper (silver packets here), because I wanted to taste the tobacco, not burning paper.

Sure, an EVOD is fine to give up smoking, just as the cheapest packet of coffin nails will get you your nicotine fix. But a Protank tastes better, and a rebuilldable tastes better again. But I wouldn't tell a newbie to go straight to a rebuildable, because this is a hobby that has to be learned. Each new bit takes time to master, and before you master it it's just a huge hassle and it doesn't work right.

I'm not saying that's why you don't like the "more advanced" stuff, many people find an EVOD is all they need. But the easy part about rebuildables is winding the coil, and that is all that the youtube videos show. Choosing the size of wire, the coil and the wick so that the wicking matches the capacity of the coil is an art that can only be learned through experience. If you get it right, it vapes wonderfully. If you get it wrong, it's just bleah and you wonder what all the fuss is about.

Sure there's a few people out there who like clouds, but I'm willing to bet there's ten times more who get into all the complex stuff because it tastes better, it's cheaper and, once you know what you are doing, it's easier; there's not much to go wrong on a REO and a rebuildable coil lasts months not days or weeks. (It's fun too, so that coil may just get torn out early to be replaced by the next experiment.)

There's more to DIY vaping than clouds, just as there's more to DIY auto-customisation than urban drag-racing.
