OK, let's get into it.
The Indulgence arrived intact and complete. Only two surprises, one good, one not so good.
The not so good was that I expected to receive a 901 atty with it but got a 510. I rarely use the 510 attys any more and it will go in my pile. The good was that the finish was not what I thought it would be.
From the images, I had imagined it to have a full gloss (chrome) surface. In fact, it has a soft milled finish which looks chrome to the eye but has a satin feel and, no matter how hard I try, I can't leave fingerprints on it.
I ordered a Silver model with extended cup and passthrough.
I had read a lot about the Indulgence on the forum and immediately went over it with a fine tooth comb. I was in engineering (fabrication, machining and surfacing) so I know what to look for.
I have to say that I am hard pressed to find fault with this device. All pieces match in colour and texture. The threads are good and precise (after a small amount of machine oil they glide beautifully). All adapters snapped into place firmly and did not spin. The button feels and works like a charm.
What was not good? The 801 adapter fits perfectly in the adapter cone but an 801 atty will not screw onto it. I tried it out of the cone and it still wouldn't. The threads are not long enough to reach into the recess at the bottom of the 801 atty. My best effort got a 1mm or so bite onto the threads and was not stable enough to use. OK. I only have one 801 atty to try but it didn't work. Not too much of a hassle for me, I don't use it anyway. The 40x adapter I couldn't try because I don't have an atty. The 510 and 901 fitted perfectly.
The battery in the extended cup rattles as it is a smaller diameter. Easily fixed with cardboard.
I only managed to find one tiny flaw in the plating but I had to look really hard. Nothing to be concerned about.
The cup has a punt in the bottom of it to give it strength but I find that it also provides a very comfortable spot for a finger to rest.
It is a nice size and weight in the hand and I tend to use the standard cup more than I do the extended cup. Part of the reason for this is that the extended cup doesn't have the name engraved on it. The engraving gives a certain tactile experience to my fingers That I miss with the other cup.
I have two USB power adapters, a 1Amp and a 2Amp . I also have a car adapter at 1Amp. I could not get the passthrough to work on any of these. However it works fine on my PC so I am prepared to blame the adapters for this. I've never tried any other PT on them and things are not always as labelled.
What would I change? Obviously the 801 adapter would be a problem for some.
I would like to see the engraving on the extended cup and perhaps a sleeve to stop the rattle.
I also could not stop thinking that it wouldn't be too hard to make an adapter cone with external threads that could take a Riva style cone. I held my Riva cone on to it with a 510 carto and the difference was marked.
All in all, an exquisite piece. Beautiful to look at, a delight to hold and a joy to use. I have already recommended it to several friends and will continue to do so.
