Yeah, a drip shield is never "required", you can drip without one with no problems. Heck, direct dripping has been around a heck of a lot longer than drip shields have ;-) I use them because I like how they tighten up the draw and I am extremely prone to over-dripping, so for me they are a good idea, but for somebody else it all depends on their preference

I don't use one when I'm testing flavors and need quick access, but that wasn't your question. Required? Nope. Recommended? Hell yes! It's what, 13 bucks plus 2.99 shipping from empire mods to grab one, altho you do need a 510-510 connector. So yeah, a lil under 20 bucks gets you a drip shield and the connector.

You may ask, is it worth it? Again, yes. One thing I've noticed is that with my provari, and even moreso when I had my ego, liquid WILL seep out. Before I had my shield, or even when I forget it, I generally have that moment when I'm driving or walking along and loose juice gets all over my mod and hands. While the provari has a nice little lip that catches everything, it fills up quickly if you over-drip at all (on a provari, happens a lot. gotta keep your atty nice and wet.) Drip shields stop that, plus allow you to suck at least some of the juice back into your atty. Plus, the 510-510 connector does a great job of being a buffer against thread damage to the top of your expensive PV. Not to mention most of the EM shields look great on a provari.

A word of advice on dripping... it's not hard. Unless you just aren't dripping enough or keep flooding your atty, you're doin' it right. Knowing when to re-drip comes with time, and thats really the only tough part. I always thought I was doing something wrong when it was really just a dirty atty or too high of a resistance.
