Well, guys I just talked to an EE about this and apparently MOSFETs typically fail short-circuit, but this thing is still rocking. I'm gonna wire this thing with a fuse and call it a day. Thanks for the responses. It also looks like neither the gate voltage or the current this battery brings to the mosfet is nearly enough to blow this particular one.
