There are several options that people are using: cotton, hemp, japanese cotton (koh gen doh, etc), ramie top, rayon (cellucotton)

Each has its own fan base, japanese cotton and rayon seem to be a couple of the most popular. I went from using cotton balls to the Koh Gen Do and it was a huge improvement IMHO

A good place to look for active discussions on various wick materials is here: Rebuildable Atomizer Systems

Hope that helps :)

Is there anything better to use than cotton? Something more absorbent?

What is it about cotton you don't like? I'm no expert but as far as I know cotton is right up there as far as absorbency goes. I bought some Koh Gen Do Japanese cotton around the same time I got some READYxWICK (RxW) but I never got around to trying it. I like the RxW. This stuff is almost indestructible and it won't knock you completely on your backside if you do take a dry hit. It's not cheap in the initial outlay but it's reusable and lasts a long time. I got mine from store.rbasupplies dot com/readyxwick/ They have it in 2 or 3mm diameter. Do a search for vids and reviews off it.

Organic Japanese cotton pads are the best thing I have found. Many claims are being made about other materials but the proof..."It's in there".

IMO, they wick about the same initially. However, rayon lasts longer because it doesn't get gunked up as fast and it tastes cleaner. OTOH, it's harder to get the correct density of rayon into a coil than it is with KGD cotton. It took me a while to really get a good feel for it. Just like cotton, it's not for everyone. Different people prefer different materials. Some people like silica, ceramic, mesh, hemp, ramie, etc. Try what you can get your hands on and use what YOU prefer in your gear.

I like Phil -- a lot. But his preferences should not be taken as gospel and his testing methodology is not really representative of how wicking is used in the real world. Nobody vapes pure, 100% VG (it's too viscous) and it doesn't matter how fast a dry wick pulls up liquid, what matters is how fast an already wet wick moves new fresh liquid to your coil, especially after that wick has been used for a while.

I have been using rayon for about 3 weeks now and am happy with it. Only issue i have with it is that it gets singed kind of easily for me. After a handful of dry hits over the past 3 days in my tobh rda it was rendered basically unusable as it suddenly became very burnt tasting. but i suspect this is a density issue. I usually rewick more often than that too but have been very busy the past few days with the holiday and all. also, thanks for having me at ECF!

I have not tried ko gen do or whatever its called but that pbusardo video I would take it as a good example of what materials we use. I got some ready wick in and its really neat stuff, but I am also a fan of hollow silica cord so its not foreign thing for me to use cord type material. The ready wick has no break in or none that I noticed it wicks really well too, I like it. But its what you like that counts so try everything you can then make your decision. One material that I was not able to use is natural hemp fiber, the taste of it is too strong for me. Real earthy kinda weird dirty tasting.

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure the Chinese use the same method of fermenting Kopi Luwak coffee for making their silica cord. At least it tastes that way.

Cotton will get one going, find degummed Hemp fiber to be quite nice, personally find the wicking potential of Ramie Top to be hard to beat, plus it's being heat proof and rot resistant, gives ramie extra kudos in me book. Rayon is ok, and seems to wick at similar levels as ramie, but, yeah, if ya run out of juice and continue to try and vape, rayon will disintegrate.:D

Looking at that seaweed fiber blend, but hard to find it in stock.
