Is there anything I should do when I first open a Vivi Nova?

I'm going to crosspost something I put over at the e-cig subreddit:

"Hey all, finally back into vaping. Vaped for two years and went back to analogs for a while. Not fun. Anyways, I've got two Vivi Novas here and some TastyVapor juice on my old Knight Rider VV and well.. I feel like something is off here. The performance and taste just isn't what I expected. There are many factors to consider here. The mod is old, the batteries are old, the mod doesn't allow dual coils past a certain voltage (are the Novas considered dual coil?..), and I know some people had issues with certain TV juices in the Novas (which TV is working on). But I'd also like to make sure it isn't the Novas themselves. I've heard people "trim the wicks" and what not. I used to always de-wick my atomizers, so is there something like that that I should do to improve these things? And if so, can anyone link to or provide some instructions?

EDIT - Trimmed the wicks back on one. At first I thought I took off way too much (had to have been at least half of the damn thing..) but after trying it out it honestly seems much better. At some point I'm going to try messing with the coil. I took a look and it is VERY tightly wound. Perhaps too tight."

Anyone else have some tips for the Nova? I'd really like to get in there and make the coil a bit looser, but I'm not really sure how and I'm worried I'll screw something up.

You have the same problem I did... I couldn´t get any decent vapor or flavor out of the Vivi Nova, even after trimming the wicks and getting me an eGo Twist...

Yeah, the flavor seems much more muted than any carto I've ever used. While the vapor production is fine, I've used TV juices many times in the past and I know I should be getting more taste/vapor out of them.

I don't understand when people say they get muted flavor out of novas.. my flavor is as strong as anything else I've used(which is a lot). My only suggestion is try tweaking your voltage until you get the flavor you're looking for. Also, if your nova is gurgling, that's because your juice is to thin or you're getting juice down the center(user error)

Yeah- the first thing you should do with a Vivi Nova is repackage it and send it back. They just don't work correctly.

Aside from that, I've got the regular size now AND the mini that I started with- and they both have issues. I thought I fixed mine, but it was only temporary... Good luck, though! try out some of the other tank systems- I'm having great results with the smoktech DCT's, but I'm really about to get back into dripping, or maybe into a glass-tank screw-top type of system...I want my TASTE back, lol.

Well, there has to be a hater in every crowd right?

I like my vivi, but I do clean it every few tanks or it gets pretty harsh. It's a very simple tank that does just fine.

I'm sorry you took my post that way, but I'm not hating- I'm being serious, here. I've been trying to get mine to work for a week now, and as soon as I thought I got it working, it would give me the nastiest hit of all time. It's happened so many times now that I've given up on the stock setup, as I'm convinced there is an inherent flaw in the design of it- simple as it may be, in my experience it was not usable out of the box. Now, if I hadn't done my best to LOVE this thing (I do like the general design, in theory, and I've devoted lots of time and juice to trying to make it work), you could call me a hater. But that isn't the case.

Anyway, haters don't get anywhere in life- so if I was really one of them, I wouldn't have just won my first contest here on the boards since my return late last month! So in all actuality my night just got awesome. :D

So the Nova is BY FAR the best attachment I've used. But, when I received my first one there were a few issues that had to do with inexperience. Here's what I learned.

1. The silicone cap on top is crucial and must be placed correctly. Out of the box it almost always is. This is usually a big issue for someone the FIRST time they clean the device. It also prevents leaking, so make sure it's on just right.

2. The atty can loosen. They twist on and off, and my SO with her first nova immediately switched to a 2.8ohm head. She didn't get it screwed in correctly, and so when juice was put in it worked it's way loose and juice got inside the post. This was really bad. Fortunately it didn't cause a short. I took it completely apart, cleaned it, got some water inside the post, blew air through the post without a head on, then let it dry for an hour. After that, it worked fine.

3. If the wick is not completely dry from a cleaning, let the juice soak for a few minutes, then vape for about 10 minutes straight. I didn't inhale, just short pulls into the mouth. This was to get rid of the water and to cause the wick to pull the juice in. Works great. After about 10 minutes, if it isn't working right, someone went wrong.

4. Like all electronic devices, sometimes you get a bad one. Don't fret, it happens. Try replacing the head first, but if that doesn't work, don't despair. You just got unlucky. It happens.

Mailing it back is just stupid. This is one of the best devices I've ever touched, and I now own four, with more coming, and I have yet to get a dud. If you are getting bad nova after bad nova, it's not the device that's wrong, it's you, and I'd post here with specific details or watch some YouTube videos, as there are many about ViVi Nova care and use.

I re wick mine with cotton wicks but I do use the heads as they arrive with the stock wick in them. Generally they take about half a tank to get to the best flavor, from what I have experienced. I wash mine out after 3 fills and let them dry before I reuse them. I don't trim the wicks I like long wicks. On another thread someone suggested laying an extra wick across the top of the stock head and then putting the silicone cap back, I have not tried this yet but it may help if you search ViVi Nova on the forums and look at a few of the threads about re wicking them.

As others have said, it seems this is one of those items, you either love or hate.

im a big fan of the novas. ive got one for each of my favorite flavors.
i change the head and replace it with a head thats been soaking in vodka after every two tankfulls.
i havent tried rewicking but i might. the silica seems to work just fine for me. i do have to tip the tank between vapes to make sure i dont get a burnt hit, so maybe if i try changing to a cotton wick or SS that could alleviate that problem. or possibly just add an extra piece of wick on top of the coil.

That's a lot of accusations... It's me? I see you've been here for all of a MONTH. Inexperience? I've used every consumer-grade product that's been released since '09. i have a solid backgound in the inner workings of these devices, so I take offense when someone accuses me of being the problem when a device I own is clearly not functioning.

i've tried all of your suggestions- you've said nothing new to me. I've tried 6 different heads on 2 tanks. So apparently, you're saying that EVERY head I have is a "dud", or its me? I'm sorry, but you're not qualified to make that statement. Not with less than a month of vaping under your belt.

And I actually started two threads- one in the "tanks" section and another in the Variable-voltage section in the "APV's' forum detailing the burning issues. My devices don't wick properly. If yours do, then great- but mine sure as **** don't.

You're right, it certainly isn't you. I have seen plenty of other people complain about the Nova, but it seems they get just as much praise as they do criticism.

In my own opinion, I like the Nova if only for its simplicity and sturdiness. Other than that, the standard silica wicks just don't seem to be doing it for me. Guess I'll have to try rewicking.

After disassembling two of my coils, I found out that the problem actually goes a bit deeper than just the wicks: Mine seem to have an issue with the coil leads heating up, as there are burnt spots on the leads themselves and burn-channels and burnt material on the rubber grommets. I found a thread detailing how to rebuild these with NR wire for the leads, and as soon as I order some I'll give that a try- until then, I'm gong to explore rebuildable atty's and genesis-style tank systems... :)
