According to this article (HT Greg Conley on twitter), the Italian government is set to tax e-cigarettes at the same rate as cigarettes: Cost of e-cigarettes set to rise in Italy - The Local

This is unbelievable, no? Or not, given the declared loss of income...

This is unbelievable, no? Or not, given the declared loss of income...

Well, it's penalising the wrong people and providing an incentive for people to revert to smoking tobacco. But this is the country that thought Sylvio Berlusconi was a statesman. They then replaced him with a clown. I wouldn't look for logical thought over there....

Italy is broke .. the police stop folks that drive very expensive cars and run an income tax check in order to determine if they show income that supports the driving of that expensive car .. it's a whole different World out there folks .. we've got it very good here in the USA ..

Sadly, Italy is somewhat of a basket case for the reasons alluded to above.

It's a real pity, because Italy is a real pioneer in the e-cigarette world, and I really hope this doesn't harm home-grown industry. I imagine a lot of sales will now occur in other EU member states.
