I'm brand new to the forum, and have only been vaping for two months. I started on Mistic e-cigs, then bought some Volt CE3's to use on the KR808D-1 style Mistic batteries instead of trying to keep refilling the terrible carts that come with the Mistic.

I purchased some Mirage brand 18mg/ml menthol eliquid from Amazon.com (made in China, distributed out of CA) and have loved it. I also got a few free bottles of 24mg/ml 50/50 very flavored ejuice from VapeDudes.

Here's my dilemma: The Mirage eliquid, which I really, really enjoy, doesn't say what it's made of. The very flavorful and interesting juice from VapeDudes creates a cringingly harsh feeling in my throat that is very unpleasant. I'm trying to discern, by their effects, what ingredients cause unpleasantness, and which I find favorable.

I'm assuming that the unpleasant harsh feeling in my throat is what people call "throat hit?" And after reading some comments and threads here, can I also assume that the increased nicotine level and flavorings could be responsible for that??

Quick Question are you getting vapor off the hits you are taking? If not its probably a dry burnt hit that can sometimes irritate your throat. If you are getting vapor then you could either be using the juice at to high a voltage (depending on your device) or like you assume the nic level is just too high for your taste.

first more pg produces more throat hit, also if its harsh the device could be running too hot (usually a culprit for harshness.)

and the knotty feeling is the nic and usually goes away after a week or two.

i would have to believe you are getting dry hits and/or pure PG blend

The VapeDudes product is not pure PG, it's 50/50. The Mirage product (that I LOVE, that is smooth on the throat and feels just like smoking a menthol cigarette) I was just informed by the distributor IS pure PG, so that rules that out as the culprit.

I don't believe I'm getting dry hits, I'm using a Volt CE3 Cartomizer and can see the liquid being vaped.

The experience is an unpleasant scratchy harsh almost cough-producing feeling that makes me not want to use these liquids at all. But, if it might be the level of nicotine and perhaps flavorings, I'll cut it by 30% or so and see how that works.

So, this harshness IS what everyone calls "throat hit"?

I would have to say yes and no, in my opinion your experiencing pure PG burn and is the reason almost noone vapes a pure pg blend, I got a bottle once as a freebee of 100% pg and it choked me down, not as easy to just say this is TH. a good TH for me is just a little but of roughness, not overly harsh and a bit of a feeling in the back of my throat.the way to check is switch to something you know for sure is not 100% pg.

if you like a certain flavor almost every vender offers different blends to suit you better

EDIT: i didnt see the latest reply in time,
it could be the menthol flavoring as well, and even when you can see liquid in a clearo you can still get dry hits. keep it tilted, make sure the wicks stay wet, and go slower. it really sounds like your sucking on a dry head now.........

Not exactly. The "throat hit" is more like the sensation you get when smoking and the smoke "hits" the back of your throat. Kind of "tangible". Some say it's like a "thump". Shouldn't be harsh...just a feeling like something is there.

BTW...I'm in shock. I get my PG and VG for my DIY juice at Amazon, but had NO idea they carried "e-juice" until now. Not that I'll be getting it...but that's amazing! But sure enough...it's there! They even sell clearomizers! What a world!!!

I think I need to clear this up.

The 100% PG 18mg/ml menthol is GOOD. I LOVE it. It feels NICE. It's how I want ALL juices to feel.

The 50%PG/50%VG is BAD. It says right on the bottle that it is 50/50. It is the juice that produces the harsh feeling in my throat that I do not enjoy. I think I've inadvertently confused you.

I mostly use PG juices....some people don't like it, but many if not most do...it produces the strongest flavor and TH. The VG is much more muted in flavor...but does produce lots of vapor clouds. If clouds are where your priorities are. Of course, some people are allergic to PG. But then again, some people are sensitive to VG. I'm one of them. Too much of that stuff messes up my sinuses bad. And I don't like the extra "sweet" taste VG imparts when there's too much of it in the mix.

I've been a half-pack/day smoker for 25 years.

I started out on the cheapy Walmart Mistic e-Cig kit. I had been cigarette-free for 11 days (cold turkey) and when I realized I was going to murder my neighbor for breathing loud enough for me to hear (Yeah, I was insanely touchy, and it was my birthday) I bought the Mistic. It was cheap and easy, and fulfilled all my addiction needs but wasn't killing me or anyone around me and it didn't stink!!

I found the menthol juice in bulk on Amazon and fell in love with it...then did more research and realized there were SOOOOOO many more flavor options. That's when I started flavoring my own juice [the menthol stuff] with extracts. (Vanilla, Orange, Coffee.) The results were ok, the coffee has too much of a smoky flavor, reminds me of smoked salmon LOL

Now we're up to the present,

I got three 10ml bottles of nic juice as "gifts." (S'mores, Orange Cream, and Mocha Java.) And this has been my first experience with professionally flavored juices of different nicotine levels. The Mocha Java still has too much of a smoky flavor (hints of salmon) and all of them have that awful harsh feeling in my throat. They are also my first experience with VG, as they are 50% VG and the Mistic pre-filled carts were PG-based and the Mirage liquid (I received an email from the distributor this morning [finally]) is PG-based.

could very well be:
you cant tolerate the vg well
the vendor is adding something that is bothering you

the juice is no easy answer. i dont tolerate juices with citric acid in them, as your finding out theres a million options for juice.
head over to the juice forums for a list of quality vendors. many offer sample packs so you can try many without getting stuck with a bottle of something you dont like.
