I've been a half-pack/day smoker for 25 years.

I started out on the cheapy Walmart Mistic e-Cig kit. I had been cigarette-free for 11 days (cold turkey) and when I realized I was going to murder my neighbor for breathing loud enough for me to hear (Yeah, I was insanely touchy, and it was my birthday) I bought the Mistic. It was cheap and easy, and fulfilled all my addiction needs but wasn't killing me or anyone around me and it didn't stink!!

I found the menthol juice in bulk on Amazon and fell in love with it...then did more research and realized there were SOOOOOO many more flavor options. That's when I started flavoring my own juice [the menthol stuff] with extracts. (Vanilla, Orange, Coffee.) The results were ok, the coffee has too much of a smoky flavor, reminds me of smoked salmon LOL

Now we're up to the present,

I got three 10ml bottles of nic juice as "gifts." (S'mores, Orange Cream, and Mocha Java.) And this has been my first experience with professionally flavored juices of different nicotine levels. The Mocha Java still has too much of a smoky flavor (hints of salmon) and all of them have that awful harsh feeling in my throat. They are also my first experience with VG, as they are 50% VG and the Mistic pre-filled carts were PG-based and the Mirage liquid (I received an email from the distributor this morning [finally]) is PG-based.

The strongest nic you can get those mystic's in is 16mg and honestly you want actually feel even that much from that weak device. You are feeling double now compared to what the mystic put out..

the juice from ivape.net has served me very well, when i first started vaping i used some china made juice and had the same problem with irritated throat. I can still get some harshness in my throat if i vape more than normal. I make my own juice now and i like the 60 vg 40 pg blend myself at 22 mg nic strength... i think this is the ratio that ivape.net sells anyway but im not positive on that.

It seems that the most I need I can get just fine from this "weak device," because I love the way it vapes the 18mg/ml menthol juice. I didn't know I would physically feel the difference in the nicotine level on my throat. Now I do.

It's not the clearos, they work really well for me with the 18mg/ml juice. I am going to cut the 24mg juice in half (for one fill's worth) and see how that works for me...It's becoming clear that the issue is the nicotine strength. I would vape more often, too, if the nic strength was lower, too much makes me feel "icky."

SO...:)

I cut one of the 24mg juices with the 18mg menthol (I've come to really enjoy the cool) and 25% water to make a Cool Orange Cream at 18.75mg/ml....soooo much better!! The throat hit is still there, AND there's the cool "Ahhh!" of the menthol. I think I found a great way to enjoy these juices!!

Thank you, everyone who posted comments and ideas, I am LOVING this forum and REALLY loving the benefits of vaping!!

Now that I've isolated the harshness, and eliminated it, I am confident that I can make my own juices. I have orders (waiting to be placed) with Perfumer's Apprentice for flavorings, and with ecigexpress for the unflavored PG nic juice. Basically, for $20 I can get all the ingredients to make half a dozen 30ml bottles of my favorite flavors, and still have enough to modify to vapability the juices I already have. ;)

So, this harshness IS what everyone calls "throat hit"?

It's hard to gauge from the word "harshness" the exact sensation you're referring to. My experience isn't too much greater than yours, but I've discovered there are two very different sensations at the back of my throat from a good hit or a bad one. "Good throat hit" should feel warm, solid but not uncomfortable -- very, very close to the same sensation you would get from taking a good, long pull on an analog cigarette.

"Bad throat hit", though, is a burning sensation at the back of the throat that can trigger a "scratchy" feeling that makes you want to cough. At some point, you'll probably have experienced both and will even be able to tell that your cartomizer or cartridge needs a refill based on feeling the throat hit start to go from the former to the latter.

Also, I agree with onfire -- check your cart/carto/tank to make sure you aren't low on juice, try a juice with a lower nicotine strength, and in the event you're using a variable-voltage e-cig, try adjusting the voltage downward until you get that "good throat hit."
