They two hosts of Dual Survival were given an e-cig as a "survival supply" recently during an episode on the Discovery Channel, turns out that if you mix the e-liquid and potassium permanganate you can start a fire with it.

I saw that episode and decided to look up why a volcanologist would be carrying a bottle of the potassium and didn't find much. Entertaining anyhow!

If they'd had steel wool they could have used that to short the battery and start a fire that way - though again why would they be carrying steel wool?

Think it's mainly a universal survival thingy for treating water and such. I'm neither survivalist nor volcanologist, tho. Wouldn't know. For some unknown reason I'm a sucker for survivalist/outdoors programs. Not the supermacho kind, mind you.

Had they been in a dryer environment I thought even the coil could be exposed and used to light tender for a fire.

I cannot quote what was said, but I believe Kubrick referred to it as a pen and the scene was to demonstrate man losing control of his technology.
