is torching necessary?

I just ordered a trident clone and i was wondering if I really needed to buy a torch for my kanthal or if it was okay to just use a lighter? Currently I still have a bunch of lighters from when I used to smoke analogs.

For kanthal, a regular lighter will work.
Just keep it in the blue part of the flame.
If you have a small pocket torch that will work too.
If you are planning on using silica wick, you'll need a small butane torch at least.
Like a pencil torch.
I use a creme brule/kitchen style torch.

lighter is fine. i use one but just for the silica not even the wire myself lol.

I'm planning on using cotton and just torching the kanthal. So as long as I keep it in the blue part, I should be fine?

A lighter works great. Might just get a little hot. If you have a gas kitchen stove, that will work too. It's not necessary to torch the wire. It just makes it a bit softer so coiling is easier. The silica or ekowool wicks should be torch to remove any residue on them. I sometimes torch them after making them because I forget to do it before.

I use one of them jet flame lighters. I found that ordinary lighters leave soot. No biggie tho... just run it through your fingers or some TP and it's gone. Don't get the "run it through your fingers" part wrong. Hurts. Been there.

What about torching SS mesh to oxidize it? What is the best fuel for that? Butane, acetylene, propane?

I don't torch my SS mesh. I just juice burn it a couple of times... held vertically burnt from top to bottom.

just pick up a $10 mini torch and $4 butane refill from Amazon like I did.... silica/ekowool tastes like chemical .......s if you don't torch them.
