It can change color. Is black a color?

Good evening ECF!

So, first off: no names.

I've been vaping like a boss since July of 2012, and by no means or measure would I ever claim to know everything. I'm in a constant state of learning about vaping and all that goes in to it, which is how I approach life in general. Learn and ask questions, learn some more, share what you know, learn more, and so on.

One of the things I've picked up is that some juices will turn colors. There are a lot of factors, from storage to wicking material to even, dare I say it, poor choice of ingredients? This is why I'm here to ask for input, because I am not pointing any fingers or jumping to conclusions. I just would like to know how the following situation came to pass:

I have a pair of Twists, my friends have both Twists and a standard eGo. Between the three of us, we have Vivi Novas, CE5's, and a few knockoff clearomizers that they use I myself don't employ. We purchased the same two flavors at the same time, and over the course of less than two days afterward these two flavors turn jet black in our respective tanks and clearos.

Now, I can't say for sure that the flavor was unaffected. I didn't detect any change, but one friend said it tasted more muted. This color change was unlike anything I've seen before: the juice was jet black. The wicks were your standard silica I imagine, but one of my Vivi Nova's had my "custom" bamboo crochet yarn wick.

I brought this to the attention of the place the liquids originated from, and was assured this was normal. Again, I have seen some liquids change to a darker color, but never as drastic as this. I haven't purchased any more liquid from this place, and have not seen any of my other liquids from different places even come close to duplicating this event.

I will save the rest of the story for the relevant forum it belongs in, but how acceptable is color changing in ejuice? Is black an acceptable hue for ejuice to turn in such a short amount of time?

More importantly: what would cause this? Three different people with three different setups, with the same result-is it safe to infer that the juice had the issue and not, as we were told, us?

Thanks in advance for any input. I'd like to hear any similar stories, if you could share!

I have some chocolate brownie that looks stone black in the plastic bottle. Also have a couple natural tobaccos that are black in the bottle. To be honest I don't think the color is a problem. What could be a problem is a darker liquid usually gunks a coil much quicker than a clearer liquid. hope that helps and good luck.

From the numerous posts in regards to this it comes to oxidation. Some juices are dark to start with and of course will get even darker after a while in the bottle as well as in your tank. This is normal and harmless.

What I worry about is how some juice will start out totally clear and stay basically that way in the bottle as long as it lasts. Then once its in use in a tank or tank atomizer it will turn almost black. I never had this happen, except when uisng a Vivi Nova and on a Kanger T2. I think this comes from the fact that the atomizer coils are pretty much "open" the juice gets swished over the top of the coils get heated/ cooked and backwash into the tank. After a short while the rest of the tankfuls, depending on how much you vape can get real dark/ black. The taste also changes from good to a sort of sooty, harsh and unpleasant.

Since I started using an Odysseus, this has never happened. They way that it wicks to the coils keeps any "backwashing" from occurring. My clear juice stays clear from start to finish and refill after refill. My wick/coil can go for up to a week or so.

When I use my NET tobaccos, its a different story, though my juice does not darken, the coils get yucky after about a tanks worth.

No, it's not safe to assume this at all. Juice darkening in a tank is a perfectly normal occurrence, and some will do it more than others. It's not a problem or an "issue" at all, probably.

The most likely cause it burnt juice dripping back down the wick into the tank. You've obviously seen it happen before -- this particular juice apparently just gets darker when it burns than some other juices.

Yes, some will get very dark. That doesn't mean there was a "poor choice of ingredients," though. It just means you bought a juice that turns dark under those circumstances. It's just not worth getting worked up over.

I'm ok, it's been some time since it happened and I only now got around to asking :] I do see the commonality of our "open top" tanks and clearos, though, and that would go much further than the head scratching I've done. I think I fell for correlation meaning causation!

Like was mentioned, oxidation is a common explaination for juice getting darker. The process starts when we first open our bottles and it's exposed to air and continues. Longer or more exposure leads to a quickening of that, as does soft plastic bottles that allow gas to pass through the walls. I'm not sure if heat helps quicken oxidation, or causes the liquid to darken through other means. I do know that when I blow an atty out in the morning, the liquid's usually a lot darker than what was put in it.
