An evening with the iTaste MVP.
So I bought this mod as a backup for my Vamo, in case in the event anything happened to it I would have a device to meet my new found VV needs. Place my order over the weekend and it got it yesterday and will admit, I was quite as excited for the arrival as I was for the Vamo. So I waited until I was off work and got home as where with the Vamo, I used my lunch break to rush home. The device was ice cold from sitting in the mail, so I gave it an hour to warm up so no condensation would harm the internal electronics. Plugged it in to let it charge and the light was green. Green in my world means it's go time
After doing some reading, for future buyers, the green light will go off when fully charged.
On to the review:
The device itself feels really solid. It feels like a high quality device that was built to last. Grimgreen in his review noted that the finish on the body feels kind of like the back of an iPad. And I would agree somewhat, though the finish on the iTaste is a little courser, but still smooth.
I bought the gun metal blue one, and am over all please. The company branding and logo feel every so lightly raised, and I am curious to see how that will hold up over time. I am also curious to see how the finish holds up with over all dally use. Unlike the Vamo, I have no plans to baby this device by placing in any kind of protective cover or case. So in coat pockets with keys and change it will go. The finish is nice, and it being kind of a matte finish, does not attract finger prints which is always a plus. I am pretty confident however it will old up. When running my finger nail over it, it actually rubbed of on the device like a extremely fine file, and no scratches were left.
The end caps are polished what looks to be, stainless steel. Out of the box, the top plate with the 510 connection had a small machine mark on it, but really a minor imperfection. These are secured by four star shaped screws and seem well built. I feel safe in saying, these plates are not going anywhere unless I remove them myself.
The 510 connection threads nicely. It covers your your standard 510 atties/cartos and it feels good when screwing them on. I noticed with the Vamo, there is a good amount of play until you have it screwed on fairly tight. The denies is also threaded for Vision ego style tanks which is nice because I have been using them here and there. The kit comes with two iTaste ego style tanks, both clear.
The kit also comes with a thank cover. That is what I am calling it and refuse to call it a beauty cap. The thank cover has a little play until tighten, but there is only a few threads so that is expected. The tank cover does work well with Vivi Nova tanks as well as the Smoketek DCT locking tanks. There is two small air holes at opposite side at the top of the cover for airflow. These seem to work well enough for me and I haven't had any issues with hard draws when vaping. Phill P noted in his review that even thought it doesn't have any kind of seal or o ring, it holds liquid ( he used water in his review) and it didn't seem to leak. Which is great as the device doesn't have a built in well for drippers and the tank cap has that covered. Sadly, I have been having some trouble finding an atty I enjoy using anymore. The last handful I have bought seem more problematic and take away from the enjoying experience, so I have not tested this myself yet.
The screen is mirrored and also had a few minor imperfections out of the box. Just a few small scratches that are by no means a deal breaker. On the screen we have VV display along the side an a plus and minus symbol below the buttons in white lettering. I noticed in Phill's review, that the symbols for the plus and minus where on the buttons on the test model and on the body on the market model he had. I am not sure if this is a different model release, but mine are on the mirrored screen adjacent to the buttons. Other then that, the devices are identical. So I am not sure if that is just a small cosmetic change they decided to go with or if they have made any other changes to the device internally maybe. The display is a red led which displays very clearly. I do however wish it was blue or an option at least, but that is just personal preference. Either way, the display is very easy to read from any angle.
On the functions.
The device is only VV. it would be nice to have VW as I have grown fond of it using the Vamo, but not a huge issue. There isn't much to this device though. You hit the plus or minus button once and it displays the puff counter then shows the voltage. Press either button again and you get the desired effect of either going up or down in voltage. The lowest setting for voltage is 3.3 and the highest is 5. I know a lot of people gripe about this device not going up to 6 volts, but never in the almost two years I have been vaping have I ever gone over 5 volts so this doesn't bother me the slightest. When selecting the voltage, it does not increment if you hold the button, and it does not round robin up or down. So if you are at 5 volts, you must press them minus button until you are back down to your desired voltage.
The power button is flesh with the body and is located on the front of the device with the iTaste logo. To turn the device on or off, just press it three times. When powering off, it also resets the puff counter, but does not reset the voltage settings. The power button is like 007, it also moon lights as the hit button and battery meter. Once the device is on, simply press and hold the power button to take your hit and the button will also light up green for good charge, yellow for low, and red for almost dead. And to note, the button feels solid, like it in in for the long haul of getting pressed a lot, which it will
On the bottom of the device is where you have your charging port as well as some other cool features. This device has a built in battery and also allows for passthrough functionality. Which means you can use the device while it is charging. After doing some reding and video watching, I have learned, you cannot use the passthrough unless the light is green when charging. So, if you have drained it completely, it will require a little time to build a charge before you can use this feature. The charging port is a micro USB connection which is used with almost every cell phone these days. I haven't tried to use my phone charger on this yet to see if it will charge with it, but I am pretty sure it would in the event I for get the cord it came with or lose it.
Also on the bottom is a USB input and a on and off button. This is used for charging external devices such as cell phones or tablets. If you plug in a device and flip the switch on, this turns your iTaste battery in to a portable charger. I really haven't played with this too much, but it did work for my iPad and cell phone. I only left it on for a few minutes just to see if it worked, and it did indeed add a little charge to both devices in the few minutes I left it plugged in. This is also a bit of an annoyance however, as the on off button doesn't sit flesh with the bottom of the device so when you set it down, it does have a wobble to it. I would recommend laying it on it side to avoid it falling over and possibly breaking a tank or damaging the device itself.
Performance:
As I said before, when I plugged the device in when I first got it it showed a great light. So I assumed it was fully charged. So I have been using this with a Vivi Nova tank with a 2.4 ohm head at 4.5 volts since around 6pm yesterday. No idea where the charge level was at lol. But, I haven't noticed a difference in my hits since I have been using it. And when I first got it, is was using it a little beyond chain vaping had have mellowed down to just chain vaping. So that to me is quite impressive already. I would of had to of put fresh batteries in my Vamo already. Phill said on a fully charged battery, he got around 29 hours out of it. Now he said vape time so I am not sure if he actually times himself vaping, but I doubt it. So compared to many mods, that is just crazy and is comforting to know I won't have to worry about it dying on me throughout the day. And I am a pretty heavy vapor since I have cut down to 10 mg nic.
Pros:
Solid build
Easy to read screen
Ego style treading
Acts as a portable charger
Great battery life
No noticeable loss in performance after long use
Nice finish that doesn't attract finger prints
Great price range
Cons:
No VW
No ohms reader - this is my biggest but even then, not huge.
Small cosmetic imperfections from factory box...
Power button location - while easy to use, at first it felt out of place. But I have already grown used to it and use the device comfortably.
Overview:
I bought this device as a back up, but am sure that it will easily find its way in to my daily routine without a doubt. I will be using this as my out and about device and leaving the Vamo at home from now on. I was pretty much over all impressed with just one evening and a morning with the ITaste and would recommend it to anyone. I bought the kit at 70 bucks... And I would seriously consider this as my new favorite starter device for people. At $70, you get everything you need to start vaping right out of the box minus juice. And I know this is a bit long, but I hope this helps someone else in making their decision to buy this device.
