For the most part, my manual switch devices tend to use the liquid a bit more quickly, and I have a tendency to vape faster than the cartridge can wick.
The most obvious answer is to put the
device down for a bit to let it wick and catch up.

I sometimes have a hard time doing that, so I often have two devices that I alternate between, allowing each to take a rest from time to time.
Bottom line is that the atomizer needs to be moist, and when you get the "off" taste after a bit, you should either give it a rest (and allow it to wick) or you can top off the cartridge. You'll want to be careful not to overfill, though, as it can flood the atomizer, which will actually decrease vapor. (Won't hurt the atomizer, though--just remove it from the device and blow through the battery end of the atomizer to remove the extra liquid.) The top of the cartridge should look wet, but liquid should not be pooling on top.
Some devices are simply liquid hogs. Even though I'm
vaping less in terms of time spent actually puffing, I'm using more liquid nowadays because I'm using higher powered devices. I'm not complaining, though.
