I like experimenting building and wrapping coils. Is there any reason that 100% cotton candlewick material can not be used??

There are some that are pre-treated with something like wax but I don't recall.
The best choice would be cotton yarn from Wally or craft store which labeled 100% cotton and boil it b4 using.
