just starting out...feedback appeciated

Hi All,

This is my first post and I am looking for some feedback on what I have purchased to make the move from RYO tobacco to vaping.

I have purchased the following hardware:

Innokin iClear 30S Dual Coil 3ml Clearomizer | VapeKing
VKS 650mAh EGO-T Battery
eGo USB Fast Charger

I have purchased the following DIY mixing kit: (from UK as I can't purchase liquid nicotine in Australia due to our laws)

50ml Platinum Ice 72mg/ml Mixing Kit @Totally Wicked

After doing a lot of reading while waiting for my purchases to arrive, I have a few questions.

1. Is the setup I have purchased dangerous in terms of battery safety?. I read some horror stories on here and don't fully understand how it works yet and got a little worried as I have purchased the same hardware for my wife.

2. The 72mg/ml nic solution I purchased is PG based. Does that mean if I only use VG to dilute with (with flavoring as well) that I will achieve a 50/50 ration of PG/VG? From what I have read, it sounds like what I would enjoy, as I like a decent throat hit (nothing crazy) with a lot of smoke when I roll my cigarettes.

3. Also with the 72mg/ml nic solution I purchased, what is the best way to store it? I have 2 children (6 & 2) which I obviously need to keep away from the nic solution. I was thinking of buying one of those small "lock up" boxes from a hardware store and putting it in my bar fridge with the mixing kit inside. Is it necessary to store 72mg/ml nic solution in the fridge or freezer? (keeping in mind that it gets to 43 degrees celcius in Aus during summer)

I really appreciate any feedback so thanks in advance.

Cheers :)

I'm here, when I'm here

1. Is the setup I have purchased dangerous in terms of battery safety?. I read some horror stories on here and don't fully understand how it works yet and got a little worried as I have purchased the same hardware for my wife. Most batteries like these have built in safety features.

Maybe this will help DIY E-Liquid Calculator Ten Flavors Plus PG/VG Adjusting

Is it necessary to store 72mg/ml nic solution in the fridge or freezer? (keeping in mind that it gets to 43 degrees celcius in Aus during summer) Not a bad idea.

I really appreciate any feedback so thanks in advance.

Hi and Welcome!

Congrats on your order! Nothing you have is unsafe at all. You may find an iclear30s is a little top heavy and a 650 mah eGo may have some trouble powering a dual coil tank. You may have more success and a longer battery life with a single coil clearo.

Hope this helps, happy vapings!

Hey Simply Red, first of all thanks for the speedy response, I was quite surprised. (this forum seems great!)

After your feedback, I feel a lot better about the battery question I asked. Cheers for that.

That calculator looks like exactly what I need to mix my ratios correctly. (keen as to try it out once I get my setup delivered)

I will take your advice on board and head down to Bunnings (Aussie hardware store) to buy a lock up box on the weekend ready for the delivery.

Thanks again for your feedback, I really appreciate it :2cool:

Hey CreepyLady , this does help..the thing I was worried about the most was battery safety so thanks for conforming it will be ok.

I will consider buying a stronger battery after trialing my new kit for a week or so.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Battery safety is a good thing to know, but for the eGo stick type battery assemblies, and factory built attys like you have, it's not a massive issue. If you move up to mods like the VAMO or ProVari, then you should make sure you know all you can about getting the right battery, and using the correct resistance range in your coils.

For now, getting comfortable with vaping is the key. Math can come later. ;>

Zadow welcome to ECF! I think your set up sounds ok. I agree with the other posters about the dual coil being a little much for that battery. With that many mah you well definitely need a back up ego t battery to last you all day without charging. Sorry i don't know about DIY liquids yet so i can't help you there. I would get the lock box because of the pups. Are you suppose to store juice in that kind of cold? Happy Vaping My Friend! :vapor:

A 650 mah eGo battery won't last very long using a dual coil juice attachment like the iClear 30. You would be better served using a 1000 mah or 1300 mah eGo battery.

Hi Baditude, Thanks for your feedback. When you say "won't last very long using a dual coil juice attachment". How long do you mean?. I usually smoke around 4 grams of RYO tobacco a day (10-12 medium sized cigarettes using Venti papers + micro filters). Do you think the 650 mah battery will last a day for my habit?

I work in IT so I could plug it into charge when I'm at my desk which is 7.5 hours a day. Is this good practice for the batteries?

If not I will definitely purchase a bigger battery as you and others have recommended.

Thanks again to you Baditude and everyone else that has responded with feedback/advice so far.(and so quickly!)

Wow, the response on this forum is crazy, thanks Charon and davis0710 for you suggestions. Taken on board :)

Looks like the consensus is that I will need bigger batteries to sustain my usual smoking habits with the hardware I have purchased. I think the wife will need 2 x 1300 mah batteries a day without charging to sustain hers from what I've read...blimey.

Cheers all

Hi

I agree with the Lady and 'Bad that you may find your battery a little lacking in context of that clearo. And did you only get one battery? That's going to be a problem - you can't use a battery while it's charging.

The battery safety issues come a lot more into play with mechanical mods that have zero electronics in there. Even your eGo battery has safety features in it that won't let the battery fire if it detects an unsafe condition.

Honestly you have more safety issues here when it comes to handling that 72 mg nic and making sure you calculate properly to mix it down to the level you want. You will want to be heading to the DIY sub forum here => DIY E-Liquid Read the stickies for your most needed info when starting DIY. You might not have access to that part of the forum until you get your first five posts in.

Dual coils are two coils in one juice attachment. They will require more power from the battery than just a single coil would. Therefore, a 650 mAh battery will be pushed to supply that additional power and will not last as long as using a single coil attachment. You'll get longer battery use if you go with a higher mAh battery.

You also need a second battery. One for backup and to use when the primary battery is on the charger (you can't use the battery while its being charged, and the 1300 mah battery generally takes 3.5 hours to recharge.

You'll also need backup juice attachments, or at the very least some replacement coil heads for the iClear 30. Coil heads go bad after 2 - 3 weeks and will need to be replaced accordingly. When flavors become muted or burnt tasting or there's a drop in vapor production, it will be time to replace the heads.

You'll probably vape a couple off puffs at a time, but far more often than you'd smoke. A general rule is roughly 1 hour of battery life per 100/mah rated on the battery. You can certainly top it off once or twice a day at your desk, but having a backup isn't a bad idea no matter what.

Hey Charon, if that's the case then a 650 mah should do my work day ok with an hour top up or 2 at my desk each day.
I will still need to buy bigger ones for the wife though according to the feedback I have received. (shes out a lot running the kids around)

Will grab a backup battery for both of us, once we start this I don't want to be left "high & dry" waiting for another battery if something goes wrong, as I know we will go back to "anolog" smoking while waiting for the replacement. (must be avoided)

Thanks again :)

Hey Rickajho,

Thanks for the battery tips, all feedback has been consistent so far in regards to what I purchased.

In terms of mixing, I have read up a lot and I believe I understand the dangers of doing so. I was planning on wearing rubber gloves/long sleeve shirt when mixing to keep any potential spills/splashes off my skin and also wearing a light "dust mask" like painters wear. Is this approach over the top?

Cheers.

Thanks again Bat, I didn't know they had to be replaced on a fairly regular basis.

Ordering some of these bad boys now:

Innokin iClear 30S Replacement Dual Coil | VapeKing

I understand your "coil replacement" comment, but what do you mean by "backup juice attachments"?

Cheers.

PS..Thanks to all the members who have given a very warm welcome :)
