Hey guys. As it says above, I just got my 1st rebuildable atomizer in the mail today. I've got a AGA-T+. I know most people prefer mesh but silica is cheaper and I'd like to practice with that until I get it working right and then go to mesh when I'm more confident.

I've been successful in creating my coils to the degree that I'm getting anywhere from 1.5-2.0 ohms each time I make one. However I'm not getting good performance from it when I try and vape. I'm using 3mm wick with 32 AWG kanthal wire and building a U wick. The juice i'm testing with is Legend from HHV at 70/30 24mg nic. Trying to vape it at 6watts.

All I'm getting here is burnt flavor. Does anyone have any experience with this? Again please don't recommend mesh as I'm sure a lot of you feel very strongly about using it. All I'm interested in is silica wick at this time.

don't have much experience in silica but just keep in mind the air hole alignment. with MESH this placement is crucial so when doing u-wicks and such if the air hole isn't properly adjusted it just wont work good.

This was working great for a little bit, but it did give me one really bad burnt hit. Just tried it again after tilting near upside down for a minute and it hit decent enough.

The pic looks like its the coil is resting against the post but it isnt. When i was building it i pressed it against it to kind of form it a little bit but then moved it away. The resistance on this one is approx 2.1ohms.

couple things i found when trying to do this with silica. dont choke the wick with the coil make sure its got room to expand with the juice or it will burn off faster then it can resoak.
try not to run them too high on wattage/voltage/ silica takes less heat to vaporize fluid.
and the fatter the wick the better.

im still playing with this idea and i have my rsst set up with a vertical silica wick right now, but being someone who started with mesh right away i think silica in a geni is much more fussy to get a great vape.

i don't have a lot of experience with silica,
but the coils seems pretty tight around the wick indeed,
try to give not to choke the wick as Trasher suggests and
maybe give the whole setup a bit more room for air
flow, spread the coils a bit.

with a mesh setup the coil would be above the air hole,
more to the side of the deck, then at the middle,
align the airhole of your top-cap in front of your coil.

So I've got an idea in my head about a dual coil vertical wick. My idea is to do 2 vertical wicks and have a coil on each one. I would have them each connected to the center post but not touching and ground them to separate locations. One would be ground to the tiny screw that has the whole through it and the other would be connected to the base under one of the removeable screws.

How does that sound?

If silica doesn't wick upwards, a megaton of top-coil users are very confused.

You can certainly use silica in an aga-t, or a Hydra, or a Griffin. You cannot coil it tightly or it chokes the wick. You might try coiling around a small screwdriver and inserting the wick, or adding a pin or wire to the eick and coiling around that - withdrawing the pin will loosen properly.

SS mesh has dozens of it's own issues - starting with shorts.

The issue I noticed wasn't with a choked wick, it was the limited saturation of the wick below the coil. I used a vg juice, and a half full tank, and 3 mm silica. It couldn't keep up with my hits. I'd pull the cap and the wick in the hole, under the coil, was drier than it should be. I wouldn't compare this to top coil clearos, the physical aspects are very different.
