This formula is one of the most important things to know. Voltage/ohms= amps.


Every battery has an amp rating. If it is exceeded you will be risking the battery catching fire (no joke).

I highly recommend getting a reasonably cheap multimeter to check the ohms of each coil you build. Also, the sony 30 amp is a good battery as well as the efest 20 amp. I have the both and am pretty happy with them. I suggest leaving a bit of margin between the amp draw of your coil build and the battery amp rating.

remember that rating is for a new battery in perfect condition.

I have 2 K101's and they are great inexpensive mechs. For batteries I personally use Efest IMR's and Sony Hybrids. As far as safe coils builds go I would spend the time and do alot of research here on ECF. If you have a good 30 amp battery you will be more than OK if you stay above 1.0 ohms(actually lower but you need to understand Ohm's Law to figure that out for yourself). It is really important that you understand the amperage draw the coil will require from your battery.

Using that you can put in the ohms of the coil you intend to use and the voltage of the battery and it will then give you the wattage and AMPS. I would highly recommend you start your 1st coils above 1.5 ohms just to be safe and to get familiar with the whole process. For me personally I made a few sub-ohm coils but they don't make that big of a difference to me. I build all my coils between 1.2 - 1.6 ohms and I get tons of flavor and good clouds.

Using a rebuildable atomizer on a mechanical mod requires some basic knowledge and research to do it safely. This combination can cause a battery to hard short and go into thermal runaway if you don't know what you are doing.

Definitely get an ohm reader or digital multimeter to measure your coil's resistance. This is essential. Guesswork is foolhardy and dangerous. Know the proper batteries to use (high drain) with enough amps in continuous discharge to safely power the coil you make. Don't use a battery that you don't know the amp limits for.

Thanks for the replies. In regards to Ohm's law I do know it (I have used my Venus before, but never below 1 Ohm) and I try to be relatively safe when rebuilding. However this is the start of me sub-ohm vaping and I want to make sure I'm safe when building a .3/.4 ohm coil.

Also, how do I know how much capacity I have left in a battery without carrying a multimeter around everywhere?

From what I've done research wise if I buy an 18650 rated at 15amps and run a .4 build in a RBA on the K101 I should be "safe".

Honestly I'd recommend at least a 20 amp if you plan to go to .3 ohms. Just me though. There is really only one way to tell the remaining battery life with a mech, and that's performance drop. You'll learn to guess (with reasonable accuracy) where your battery charge is by the change in performance.

I would honestly recommend buying at least 2 batteries. A 2100 mah 18650 will last me easily through an 8 hour day. A 16 hour day, not so much.

If you're going to be going down to 0.4 - 0.3 ohms, I would get the Sony US18650VTC4. They are in stock at Illumination Supply for $8.50 each. Their shipping charge for two to me in Canada was $8 and I bet it's less to you.

At 2100 mAh and 30A, it's the best deal out there in high quality, long lasting, sub-ohm safe batteries that pack a punch for a long time.

After you've vaped a mech mod for a few battery discharge cycles you'll know what the vape is like when the battery is at about 3.7V. Try it and you'll see. Until you feel confident you can tell, keep the DMM close and use it often :)

All good advice. The Aw batteries are great as well and rated for 30 amps also. I wouldn't get anything under 20 amps. As far as the K101 goes it will handle any load you want to put on it. It is just a battery tube after all.

AW are great batteries, but the 2000 mAh 18650 is rated for 10A so that's out for this application. The 1600 mAh is rated for 24A. I don't have one to test beside the Sony, but IMO the Sony is better all around for this one.
