I've been using Kanger EVods for awhile now, with outstanding results, no leaks, gurgling, dry hits or any other issues... Yesterday I removed the 2 "flavor wicks" that sit above the coil...removing these extra wicks was recommended by a couple respected ecig gurus...BAD IDEA in my opinion, here's why.

These 2 small wicks seem to regulate the amount of liquid fed to the coil, all 3 of my EVods began gurgling shortly after removing these wicks, and you can clearly see that there's a small gap between the top of the wick that holds the coil and the bottom edge of the silicone cap that sits on top of the coil, if the silicone cap was 1/2 mm taller, or the main wick/coil were a slightly bigger diameter these additional wicks wouldn't be necessary IMO.

I'd like to know what Kanger calls these 2 additional wicks, I'd be willing to bet their not for flavor, but to regulate wicking.

2 of my 3 liquids being used right now are pretty thick, one being Bobas Bounty, so anyone thinking it might be the liquid causing this problem...I'd say not likely, put the wicks back...problem solved, same flavor...no gurgling or weeping liquid down to my batteries.

I haven't found any need to remove the wicks in an EVOD.
With a ProTank however, I found that even my thin juice was having a hard time getting to the coil - flavor was being muted by the "flavor wicks". So I removed half of it - and there was an improvement. And NO leaking or gurgling.
So that's my :2c:.
Remove half the wick from a ProTank coil for a ProTank, but not from an EVOD coil for an EVOD.
Start mixing 'em up, and I can't help ya - haven't done that yet...(cause I still have some short-stem EVOD coils)!

I normally just toss the silica flavor wicks on any Kanger coil head and replace it with 3mm bamboo wick (or cotton if you prefer). I've also experimented a bit with flavor wicks and thick juice, and found that removing (unwinding?) a few "strings" or windings from one of the standard flavor wicks will improve flow without any flooding.

You have to experiment a bit as it's juice dependent on how well it does or doesn't work. I've never removed an entire wick or wicks though, because... as you've discovered, it floods like crazy if you leave a gap in the wick slot.

I feel like a real ecig geek for knowing this, but….....….skelley coined the term “flavor” wick on about the third page of the big T3 thread he started last September. Even though the name is a misnomer, it stuck, and now we all know what it means.

Doesn't the 3mm wick circumvent the need/point behind flavor wicks to begin with? I understand the wick in the PT heads is 2mm, and the flavor wicks are 1mm (not sure if that's individually or both together)... so I would wonder if a 3mm wick gives you the same point behind the stock flavor wicks as they would regulate the flow of juices.

This is the route I am going as well. I ordered some 3mm wick as it sounded like the overwelming winner behind the custom-PT-rebuild-crowd. I hope it fairs well.

I'm pretty sure State meant experimenting with flavor wicks on the stock coils.

I rebuilt my first Kanger head last week with 3mm silica and have had zero leakage and no dry hits. I'm using a thinner 70/30 PG/VG eliquid with it right now though, so I need to test it out with a high-VG juice and see how it feeds.

If you use a thin juice I would recommend 3mm silica for sure; I've had a much more satisfying vape experience with the one I rebuilt than with the stock heads I have.

Yes sir Mr. Zero... that is correct. ;-)

Also, bamboo, cotton, silica and their variations compress, absorb and expand at different rates... so you frequently cannot dimensionally compare one directly to the other. Even "silica" can have enough variation as to require fine tuning the diameters.

Apologies for my slow response to the above... been away most of the day.

Cheers,

I vape all kinds of ratios of juices in my T3's and none gurgle, leak or dry hit. I use 2mm hollow ekowool and a 1mm silica flavor wick in my protank rebuilds. Slide a pin thru the wool to have a solid work surface. Kangers interpretation if wicking is real cheap in the stock protank heads, thus they are prone to leaking between under the stem cap and top of the coil.
I have several on the go so I cut a few holes in a dollar store sponge and invert the protanks and T3's and they don't slowly seep juice out while not on a PV.
I've had nothing but success with my protanks and T3's and looking forward to getting my PT2's and mini's soon.

Sounds like 3mm is a win for both of us.
