Anybody know what wire kanger uses? I have been trying to duplicate the 0.5ohm build and with kanthal I can't seem to get there.

When I pulled the stock coil apart it was 5 wraps with around 80mm of wire from positive to negative. To get that resistance at that length with kanthal would be 24ga but when I build that coil it takes much longer to heat up and cool down. The stock coil is nearly instant at 25w.

I measured the stock wire diameter and came out at 28ga. Using the steam engine coil calculator that would seem to indicate titanium grade 2 wire to produce that coil resistance at that length of wire and wire gauge. When the stock coil was dry burned it had a green coloring to it afterwards so that would seem to me to indicate this is correct, but I can't find that material in 28ga available anywhere to test it.

Roy, first of all Welcome!

I tore apart an OCC yesterday, and noticed "thicker" (than I normally use) wire with fewer wraps. One thing I thought I saw was that it looked like NR-R-NR wire - I swore I saw two "solder joints" on the legs of the coil. So, I'm wondering if 80mm end-to-end or joint-to-joint? I re-wrapped with 5 turns around 1/8" (maybe bigger) drill bit of 28g (that's the lowest I currently have) and I ended up with 1.3Ω I'm going to try 26g next time I can grab some from my B&M. I'd like a little lower than 1.3, but I'm not displeased!

Thanks!

And upon closer inspection you are correct, and I tore another one apart to confirm. There appears to be 43mm of resistance wire and 18mm of non resistance wire on each end. It measures as 0.0130" diameter wire which is 28ga. Assuming the NR wire is N200, that would put the resistance wire just over 0.01ohms/mm. For the options on steam engine coil calculator that could put it as possibly nichrome N20, SS317L, or titanium ready (e-sg).
