Reading on the Maryland Vapers FB page that a ProTank 2 user had one shatter in his hand tonight.

From what I can tell, the Kanger site only says the tank is glass, but some reseller sites (Entire Link: New - KangerTech Protank 2 - Pyrex Glass 2.5ml Bottom Feed Tank - MyFreedomSmokes.com) are saying it is pyrex.

So, given the incident, can anyone confirm the glass is pyrex?

Pyrex is a brand, just like Xerox. However, they have become synonymous with other products that uses the same material or serves the same function.

Unless Kanger licensed the name from World Kitchen LLC (a spin-off of Corning which were the original holders of the brand), then it's a "Pyrex-like" glass.

Pyrex is a borosilicate type of glass, but "Pyrex-like" is easier for most people to imagine the type of glass, rather than "Borosilicate type" of glass...

Even if it's "Pyrex-like" it doesn't mean it's unbreakable... :)

Mine just broke on me. Dropped it in the car while driving. After pulling over and stopping to retrieve it, all my juice was on the carpet of the car, and the tank was shattered. It didn't even hit anything on the way down except carpet and it landed on the Provari battery insertion end not on the tank end. I was really enjoying the Pro Tank 2. I had only had it for a day and a half the vape was great and had better flavor than cartomizers. I'm very dissapointed with this. Does any one know where to get tempered pyrex for the pro tank 2?

Yes the Glass is Pyrex-like
Yes Pyrex Breaks/shatters
No Pyrex is NOT Safety Glass

Can a Pyrex tank shatter in hands? Yes. If damaged in any way, even a slight drop in the sink while cleaning, micro fractures can be formed.Once assembled with constant pressure on the micro fracture it can suddenly erupt into a full on Break. All glass tends to splinter so the crack will split into several directions in a Milli-second and multiple pieces will be the result.

This sounds bad. Hope it is just user abuse, I love my Protank (I) and Mini Protank.

I don't know why this surprises anyone. Pyrex CAN, and WILL crack under certain circumstances. As others have mentioned, it is much more crack and heat resistant than other types of commonly used glass (in manufacturing I mean, not glass used in ecigs obviously).

Pyrex-like glass is the type of glass most commonly used in ecig products....I havent seen any other type of glass used, and I think pyrex-like glass works very well.

There will ALWAYS be those 1 out 5,000 cases where a product malfunctions, or gives due to stress, whether created by the user or the environment, or a defect. It happens in EVERY industry.

I watched a video of the guy from sunvapers purposely breaking the glass of a PT1 inside of a baggy with a wrench or something, in order to make sure the new PT1s dont use glue. So it IS breakable....but shouldn't break unless it is stressed in an unnatural way, or defective.

I would NOT worry about your PT breaking. It can happen - sure....but I have dropped mine on concrete twice, and probably at LEAST 15 times elsewhere, with no problems whatso ever ( I have a condition that causes really bad tremors in my hands).

The problem with the glass is its too thin. If they made it thicker it would be a lot more durable. I dropped kine accidently a couple inches on the counter and it shattered. I need a replacement smoke glass but they are out of stock everywhere.

btw does anyone know where I can get the o rings for the protank 2 that seal the tank?

I can't say whether the glass used in the Protank I or II are Pyrex. But to me, it doesn't matter. Pyrex is no longer borosilicate glass - they changed their formula a while back (actual Pyrex, bought from a reputable dealer), you might have noticed a difference in your pyrex cookware over the last twenty years. There have been a number of incidents of glass shattering with pyrex in recent years (even a quick look at Amazon's reviews will verify). I believe the decision to go away from borosilicate is due to an environmental concern (as a result of manufacturing or disposal, I don't know). What I'm saying is, if you like to cook, steal your moms/grandmom's cookware!

PS: I'm not saying borosilicate isn't available anymore, simply that Pyrex (even when you know 100% that it is actual Pyrex) isn't borosilicate anymore and the new formula is much more prone to shattering under heat.

Wikipedia says:

"The European manufacturer of Pyrex, Arc International, uses borosilicate glass in its Pyrex glass kitchen products;[2] however, the U.S. manufacturer of Pyrex kitchenware uses tempered soda-lime glass.[3] Thus Pyrex can refer to either soda-lime glass or borosilicate glass when discussing kitchen glassware, while Pyrex, Bomex, Duran, TGI and Simax all refer to borosilicate glass when discussing laboratory glassware."

Replace it with the Clear for more durability. Everyone says the Colors are much lighter.........which means they are much thinner.
