Going to try the silica string first just to learn to wrap the coil then maybe I can try cotton. Trying to keep it simple at first. Going to make an order today for the supplies.

Actually, that is not such a good idea. It is far harder to wrap around silica than make a coil from scratch.
I have meters of silica doing nothing... I wouldn't recommend it.

I wouldn't try to wrap it around the silica. I'd wrap the coil first with a drill bit and then string it with silica.

I use a very small diameter hex key to build on. I take my wick and press it on the key, then wrap the coil around the whole thing. Then I insert the whole assembly into the coil head. The hex key is great for keeping the coil and wick stable while I reassemble the silicon insulator and metal base. Once everything is back together, I pull the hex key out, replace the top stem and cap, and trim the wick with nail clippers. Done.

You may save some trouble by buying premaid coils, like these:
$2.16 Pre-Coiled Welded Wires - NR-R-NR (50-Pack) 50-pack - 33 AWG / 1.8ohm / 30*30mm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping
You can rewick your existing coils: when taste becomes bad, just replace old wicks with new ones. Coil itself can last much longer with new wicks.

Even if you use premaid coils you still need to use ohm meter to check for shorts. If you have vv/ww mod with built-in ohm meter it will work also.

Actually, to put a cotton wick into a protank coil is rater easy.

My itaste has ohm meter built in so no worries there. Seeing it done and video and then doing it are different things. It looks so easy on video but then I look at the head and it's so small, I may need a magnifying glass.

 Forgot to give you this.:)

Coiling Calculator

Here are a few links for you regarding building coils and getting the resistance just where you want it:
1. Steam Engine
2. Coil Toy Calculator

Make sure to check your build with an ohm reader or DMM before putting it on your mod and firing it.
