Hi,

I have two protanks and the following issue happens in both as of 1 week: I fill the tank with Hangsen RY4 in the evening. This is a kind of clear liquid, yellowish let's say, but very clear. Until the next evening it darkens, and it becomes dark orange of sorts. It's not that much left when this happens. The vape is very harsh, almost like eating a spicy hot food.

This happens with both the tanks. I put a new coil yesterday, and still this happened today.

I am puzzled. This didn't always happen, it's only in the last week. I have the tanks from 32 days ago.

Since I bought them, I washed the used one each evening (I use up 1 tank per day) thoroughly with hot water, then let it soak in hot water for another hour. Then I put them on a paper towel and let them air dry till I need to use them again.
When I want to use the dry one, I dry burn the coil, then soak it with RY4, put the flavor wicks on, soak them in RY4, then fill and assemble the rest of the device. This happens every day, and I always went through this process after each tank was empty.
I never used a tank twice in a row without washing.

Anyone has any idea what exactly is going on? Do any component rust by any chance?

this happens with all e-cigs some more than others and some juices more than others. we are dealing with capillary action here. in any e-fluid there are a lot of different molecules the size of the molecules vary greatly from really long to very tiny. what happens when fluid becomes darker is that the smaller molecules are easily pulled through the wick and into the coils and vaped and the longer or larger molecules are the ones are left behind because it takes more time and or force for them to make there way though the wick. tobacco juices (RY4 is a tobacco juice) are known to produce this effect a lot faster than other juices.

Couple things... just basic things.. are you vaping too hot for your resistance? does it happen in other tanks besides the protank.. if you don't have another one that's ok. You could be getting a short somewhere causing the liquid to burn, usually once this occurs it can ruin a whole tank.. could be wicking issues causing burning.. could honestly be the liquid it self, i have had some liquids that just gunk up too fast and cause the discolor and taste... as far as rust it's unlikely are you cleaning off the coil with a brush or compressed air after you dry burn as it can leave an ash on the coil surface.. learned that one in a tank awhile ago tasted like poop and had waves of dark coming from coil area. Just tips and ideas.

That is one of the coolest explanations ever! I don't even care if it is true or not, but it sounds feasible!
Jeez, I am not even close to smart enough to hang out in here!

I am just going to sit back and vape!

Thanks all for the quick replies.

I am vaping at 7.5 W with 2.4-2.5 ohm coils. So that's 4.24-4.33 V (set automatically by the eVic). I don't really know if it's too hot, just seems right for me (tried various powers between 5 and 9 and I think 7.5 is the best one).

I have only these 2 tanks, I just started 32 days ago :) I remember that before this I was rarely filling one complete tank since I was trying out various juices.

The liquid is definitely clear in the morning after sitting the whole night in the tank. The darkening doesn't bother me, but the very harsh and deteriorated taste does. I will try to fill and vape half tank at a time and report back with the findings.

Well, good on you for having a great cleaning regiment! Especially with your juice, that's a great idea.

As for your voltage, it seems fine, esp. with 2.5 coils. Sometimes though, I've found, some juices just can't be run that high - even RY4's from two different vendors may vary on acceptable watts/voltages. Maybe try a tank that's dialed down a bit, see if it happens again?

You might want to try replacing the wick. They can look clean on the outside, but have residue on the inside. I rebuilt one last night like that, that was giving me that same burned taste, after soaking, cleaning and burning the coils. So, I decided to tear it down and take a look at it (I just started rebuilding coils, so no big deal.)

The wick, when I pulled it out, was white on the outside, but pitch black on the inside. I have no idea how to clean that, other than maybe burning off distilled water through the tank? Easier to just put a new piece in, really. If you're careful yo can do it without disrupting the coil.

I also found that the well inside the head, where the coil sits, was gunked up (was vaping a cafe mocha that gunks up wicks fast). Cleaned that out with a q-tip dipped in a little alcohol, and rebuilt the coil and put in a fresh wick - no burned taste.

These two places in the head would be very difficult to clean out by soaking and burning off - you may want to take a look in both areas to see if that's what's happening.
