Chris, 26 or 28awg are pretty easy to work with. But if you've never built, I strongly recommend that you either go to a good B&M for some instruction, or read a lot. You will also need to test fire your coil to determine ohms and to make sure it fires properly. Do you have either a mod that measures ohms or an ohms meter? Finally, please do be sure that you are using a battery that can handle your build. You may want to check out Steam Engine for specs. As to cotton, I use organic cotton - KGD (I get is at Nordstrom in the Beauty dept). I'm sure other cotton works just fine, but I do think organic, un bleached is best.

Welcome to ecf, and good luck!

If you are bound and determined to try building your own coil 28awg is the best all around. An 8 wrap microcoil will give you a 1.5ohm build can be fired with just about anything. Get a Variable mod so you can try different settings to see what fits you best. With a 1.5 coil I start out with it at about 9w let it settle in and then around 11-12w is what I like. That was the first coil I tried and I still use it today on many things. Great taste and lasts a long time. 26awg is more for subohming which you have to have a device that will fire it. I'm running one now 8 wraps spaced at .8ohms about 15w but none of my Provaris will fire it except the P3

You in theory, could use the cotton in your jeans but organic cotton doesn't have all the chemicals in it that were used in processing the cotton for your clothes or dyes or different kinds of other materials used in "blended" cotton fabric. As for wire size/gage, it depends on what the resistance of the coil you intend to build is going to be (how many wraps, the length of the wire, diameter of the coils, etc).

Is 26 gauge kanthal good to use for a beginner? Also can I buy my cotton at CVS or walgreens? Or does it need to be a special cotton? Thanks

As others have said, 28 gauge would probably be better to start out with. As for cotton, yes you can get cotton at CVS or Walgreens but if you do make sure it's the organic cotton. Koh Gen Do (KGD) is an organic Japanese cotton which comes in pads and wicks much better than the cotton balls you can get at the local drug store.
