28 years ago, on March 24 1989, Exxon Valdez happened. I worked at the Cinti Zoo at the time. We were all devastated by the event. Being a wild bird rehabilitator at the time I resolved to go help clean up birds. With financial help from some friends i did just that. I spent two weeks in Valdez helping wash wild birds. It was exhausting work but so rewarding to see the birds returned to their world. But we couldnt save all of them - we lost a lot. The best estimates of the number of animals killed by direct contact with the oil are: 250,000 seabirds, 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles, up to 22 killer whales. These numbers are considered too low by some scientists because many more were never found - so many birds were so sick that they died before they could be helped and most carcasses sunk because they were covered in oil.

The powers to be kept assuring us that after the environmental clean-up the Valdez Sound area would be what it used to be - a pristine heaven for wildlife. Nearly 30 years after the spill, about 20 acres of Prince William Sound shoreline are still contaminated with thousands of gallons of oil. The oil is just as toxic as it was right after the spill. It is decomposing no more than 4.0% a year. It could take centuries to completely dissipate. I suppose our avarice for oil will ultimately destroy the earth. 28 years ago it destroyed a peace of heaven.

I still get angry when I think about it.

What Was the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill?

Not sure how many people here would have known him, but I found out in a squonk thread at the other forum that Hank Spankman passed away yesterday. From what I know right now it appears to have been unexpected. He was a good guy.
Yeah,i seen this posted in another thread he frequented too.I didn't know him,but a lot of his posts had some good tips, and he seemed like a very helpful guy.Sad to hear about anybody passing on.

I know  Our first day out was probably the "worst". SO was pretty exhausted and slept almost the whole way to Valdosta. The remaining 3 days were pretty good - she even took turns driving for a little bit each day :)
How ie SO doing since you got home? Has she been to the Dr yet? I think of her often.

Thank you, Sweets :). Always grateful for positive thoughts. She has an appointment this coming week. Also, getting over "homesickness" helps a lot.

I had the most awesomest day yesterday!! Between meeting Cathy, spending time with my daughter and grandson, spending some much needed family time with my niece and her family to having the day off from work. :):):):):):) Can I have a do over again today? :D

Yes, I get green beans, use a small air roaster. DW and I have become spoiled by good, fresh roasted, kawvee [emoji5]

I get about 5 batches per pound (5 of those 9oz mason jars). The samples I send out are each one mason jar of roasted beans, of whatever varieties I pick on a given week. I hang out in the roasting area with the pooches, it's an enjoyable morning activity [emoji5]

Nom nom nom. Chicken cordon bleu with roasted brussel sprouts in a balsamic honey glaze.

The chix was pre-fab, but a great entrée $7.50/6. Awesome leftovers!

Cleaned a bunch of tanks today. I hate rewicking when all I need is a quick dry-burn to get the gunk off the coils....

Good morning all :)
Well, Sunday wasn't not as awesome as Saturday was but still wasn't a bad day. I went in to work hoping to be sent home but no go, had to stay. Pretty easy night! I'll take it! Today I'm starting another week of wondering where I'll go, what I'll do. Bring it!! :)
