Every so often I get a 400 (Bad Request) Error or a page stating the website is down when I move from one forum to another. Or even thread to thread. It usually happens after I've been on the forum for over 20 minutes or so. I have to completely shut down my browser before the site comes back up again.

I'm running in Chrome on Windows 7 if that makes a difference.
I'm thinking it's a Chrome issue because I haven't noticed it whenever I've used Explorer.
But I hate Explorer.....

400 errors are generally caused on the user's end. It means the server thinks the request is malformed in some fashion and sends back the 400 error as a response to that bad request.

Sometimes it's caused on the server side, but if that were the case here, pretty much everyone on ECF would be seeing the errors.

You'll probably want to ensure all your addons are current and up to date.

Sounds like chrome "can't find" the pages. It is using a redirect from an older URL or something. This would be something in your cache. or a session ID thing.

1) have you tried actually signing OUT from ECF, waiting 5 mintues or so, then logging in again?

2) Aside from running thru a good trojan malware detector, virus check, and clearing cache and history (which I'll assume you've already done) .... most will fix that problem.

what exactly is the error message? Is the exact phrase
404 not found error and/or nginx there?

3) as retired1 says, check your ad ons. If up to date, disable them all, close your browser, and see if you have the same problem. If not, then it is one of your ad ons . You can go and enable/disable them one at a time after that (close browser after each try) and see which is the culprit. (hopefully not this, as it is a pain in the .... to do )

4) You can always do a "reset" in settings, advanced, in chrome, but you will lose your saved passwords, cookies, etc. if you have already done all of the above.

It shows up something like this:

404
(Bad Request)

Or I just get a page saying the site may be down please try again later.

400 (Bad Request) is the error. And those are generally caused by something on the user's end.

OK, double checking my addons since I've had this both before and after I've cleared everything and run malware/virus scans.

Yeah, I thought that is probably what you are getting. Indeed, Chrome can't find the pages. Either old pages are stuck in your cache somewhere and browser keeps trying to reuse them when they are not there anymore, or malware has changedd your host file.

After running thru program for malware (Malwarebytes is free) and wahtever antivirus you are using:

Google Chrome:
Tools (wrench), more tools ....Clear browsing data...
[x] Clear browsing history
[x] Clear download history
[x] Empty the cache
[x] Delete cookies
Clear data from this period: → Everything
→ Clear Browsing Data

Reboot your computer.

Also, check the proxy settings of your browser. It must be set up to no proxy. Tools, settings, advanced, network, change proxy settings, LAN settings: Nothing should be checked under LAN settings

And I would STILL sign in and out of ECF. I have had 3 problems here in 3 years, signing out and signing back in fixed them. Don't really want to go thru a big explanation, all I know is, it worked. :)
