I got my itaste mvp 2 and Kayfun Lite plus v2 clone in the mail today and took a crack at making my first coil build. It was a 1.2 ohm single coil build. I made sure to lift the coil up so it wasn't touching the base of my KFL+, compacted the coils tightly and made sure it properly glowed inside out, put enough cotton in the coil and left the juice wells open, put juice on the cotton and did test fires, and filled up my kayfun from the bottom. I did all these things but after a few puffs all I could taste was burnt metal and juice everyone probably has experienced before. I vaped it on my mvp on 10 watts. What am I doing wrong?

I don't use wattage mode, but 10 watts sounds like wee too much for a 1.2 ohm single coil. I rarely go over 3.5 volts on my Provari with a 1.2 ohm single coil in my KFL+, which I believe would be a little over 8 watts.

Did you clean the KFL prior to setting it up? Straight from the factory there could be leftover oil film from the machinery.

Also, what kind of cotton are you using? I use only organic cotton so that I don't have to boil it before use. Other cotton can have bleach or hydrogen pyroxide in it which could give a nasty taste and likely isn't too healthy to vape.

Perhaps you are using too much cotton (compacted), which is strangulating the wick in the coil preventing adequate wicking to the coil. It should be nice and loose (fluffy), not tightly compressed in the coil.

Yeah, I figured 10 watts was too much so I switched to variable voltage 3.4 volts.
I did not clean it prior to setting up. I'll do that now.
I'm using rayon cotton at the moment but might switch over to some Shiseido cotton I have on me. I made sure I used enough cotton were it will go through the coil smoothly without dragging it.
Will return with updates!

No, definitely not normal. Any leaking of juice from the air hole in the side of the base? When you removed the previous wick, was there any burnt wick where it touched the coil? I'm guessing this is a wicking issue...either too much or too little. KFL is very picky about this, and it does have a learning curve.

I've seen some vapor trails coming from the air hole after I've just taken a vape.

No leaking whatsoever. There was a burn mark on a part of the wick that was touching one of the ends of the coil. I suppose I'll experiment with how much cotton I need to put in next.

This is the hardest part with the kayfun to get the wicking right. Took me couple of tries until i got it.

Also you can vape at higher wattages... i'm vaping at 17w approx. (1ohm coil + freshly charged battery 4.2v)

Did you make sure to tuck the tails of the cotton against the side walls of the deck and not up against the side of the chimney? If you tuck it against the chimney it could cause a wicking issue.

You need to go easy on the wicking. Also you may need to prime your coil/wick by adding a few drops before you install the chimney and/or taking a few primer hits to draw the juice into your wicking. If your cotton is dry while your firing your mod, it's gunna burn.

Yeah, I put juice on the cotton after I put it into the coil and then tuck it to the side of the deck, making sure it doesn't cover up the juice wells. Then I put the chimney on.

If you are using Rayon you have to kind of STUFF the coil with rayon. Rayon will sag instead of swell like real cotton. Also make sure the tails are sitting on the deck where the juice channels end. If they are above the deck no juice can get to them.

Whats the brand of your clone? I found that Tobecco and Yiloon KFL clones tend to have juice channels badly done and the chimney cuts off flow. Use a magnifying glass and look at the spot where the vertical and horizontal channels join. If this area does not meet or is less than 1.2 mm wide then it won't flow. THese channels should be 1.2-1.5 mm wide and 1mm minimum deep (1mm seen with chimney in place). Also make sure the hole in the center post lines up with the air hole in the base or you won't get good air flow to the coil and this can cause burning/bad wicking too. Out of the box, the best KFL clone is by EHPro followed by H-Cigar.

I have a EHPro clone.

I'm currently starting from scratch. New 1.4 ohm coil. Gonna do what Shootist suggested with the Rayon cotton.

Cool, should be user error then. :). I find I get better wicking if I don't twist the cotton or rayon and just compress enough of the end to get a bit through to pull on leaving the rest fluffy. Just keep slight tension to hold the fibers straight and tight together. Tip I found on these boards that works great.

Are to taking big long draws from it if so try this build its then only one I have found that will supply enough juice to keep the coil happy for long deep lung draws The Kayfun is a fantastic unit, but for us deep lung hitters it struggles to wick enough juice on extended draws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdXjBWf8Pc0 oh and Yes this can be built in cotton

It looks like you have the coil about 45° off. The ends should line up with the juice channels, yes?? When you wrap it, be sure the legs are opposing each other when you are done.

My new build seems to be holding up much better but I'm still getting burnt hits now and then. I do take mildly long draws and chain vape frequently. That build looks a bit tricky to pull off with cotton.

Really? I just made the coil diagonal to imitate a few youtube videos I was watching. Also, my first build lined up with the juice wells and my second (current build) is diagonal.
