Diagonal coil is fine. I build all mine that way but cut the wick just long enough to touch the deck and no longer. I also cut the wick at an angle instead of straight so the wick lays without bunching up too much and I always tuck the wicks back so the juice channels are open. If you have sharp kinks in your wick it won't flow as efficiently so make sure they do a smooth curve down to the deck and are not twisted through the coil. The straighter the fibers are through the coil the easier they wick. I'll get some pics when I do my next rebuild or re-wick. Small tip for you though, don't loosen the air flow screw past flush with the base or remove it. The EHPro v3 is made so when the air flow is fully open the screw is flush with the base.

Above post has good advice, I never get burnt taste out of my kayfun and I wick like above post says. Basically I use cotton and cut the cotton so it just touches the base where the chimney attaches, then I take my juice and former the cotton in line with the juice wells. I press it back a bit while wetting the cotton with the juice. Do this on both sides before you put the chimney on. You see the slots that are juice wells going to the wick? The cotton should be formed on the deck just next to those juice slots. Once you get the cotton in the correct position and formed with your juice then put on the chimney. The material should be cut just to the length of the chimney deck that upper deck. You should be able to easily screw your chimney down. Also make sure your coil has Clearence maybe 2 mm above the air hole slot the wick should fit snugly on the coil. And not slide . This should give you a good constant vape without burning. I even chain vape and never get a dry or burnt hit as long as the cotton is correctly placed in the chimney. Hope this helps.

I'm only 3 days into my first EHPro Kayfun 3.1 and on my second coil (changed from silica to organic cotton the second day). My cotton is long enough to reach the bottom and parallel the deck without blocking the inlet channels. Vape is thick and flavorful on a 1.8 ohm 32ga Kanthal coil at 3.4v.

My cotton wick was an easy slip fit in the coil when dry and the ends were much thinner than the center coil section portion, so they didn't swell up enough to block juice flow. The coil is about 2mm above the mounting block and parallel to it. That let me run the wick ends down the end on each side and across the juice channels without blocking them. Mine hug the block away from the juice inlet ports.

The juice channels of my clones are pitiful compared to my authentic. All have given great advise on wicking which is usually the main culprit for dry hits. Try opening up the channels at next tank breakdown. In the meantime, tap the airhole while drawing, that will force juice in to the chamber. Also, tighten your airflow screw for a tighter draw, it also sucks more juice in.
