Welcome to the forum!

You're going to get a bunch of people here that'll say they ask first or never vape inside- bad for our image. Whatev. Anything that gets the word out is good IMO. And the article did have some positive things to say about vaping.

Thanks for the advice, you live and learn as they say. I just, perhaps stupidly, assumed it was ok unless they said otherwise. Using at the bar and discussing it with the bar man as you order a drink in my book is kind of asking permission and being given the 'OK'. The bar manager made a snap decision based on complaints from others in the pub. Not sure even asking permission would have got round that one?!

Hi Fletch

Thanks for posting your experience here. I've just started vaping, and I expect I'll come across this kind of thing. My aim is to educate people about vaping, by asking the pub/bar staff first rather than just getting out the PV and starting. Seems that this is exactly what you did in the bar in York!

The argument that you vaping might encourage someone else to light up an analog cigarette seems completely ridiculous to me. If someone did do that, people around would be able to tell immediately: the smell!

And then people around, the bar staff or even the police if necessary could tell them to stop or leave, with the full force of the law behind them. So unless someone lighting up an analog cig, for 5-10 seconds before stopped, is such an irrremediable disaster that even the slight risk of it happening is unacceptable, I think the staff were talking nonsense.

I'd go somewhere else.

About a year ago I went to the Tilted Kilt sports bar in downtown San Diego to watch a Chargers game.
I asked beforehand if it was okay to use my electronic cigarette and was told it was fine.

Apparently the manager also uses an electronic cigarettes.
:)

It was so nice to be able to have a few beers and watch the game while vaping away.
And knowing that the manager had my back was wonderful beyond words.

Thanks Seb,

On the rationalle they used for that one, if someone is injecting insulin as a diabetic, would they be asked to leave to stop encouraging others to inject ......? I think not....!!

Thanks for the support, and yes, education is the way forward for bars and the general public

I've been kicked out of many a pub in my younger days. Just remember it is their property.. they work hard to have that business. Eventually, more and more people will be vaping, and supply & demand will dictate that more places accommodate those people. I've always had positive reactions to it when I go out, except for once at the Science Center in Baltimore City the security guard yelled at my bro for vaping cuz he thought it was a smoke. He said, "Put it out, NOW!". Ignorance, it'll pass. Once we explained to the guy what it was, he said, "oh, that's fine then". Be patient, there are a lot of people agitated by new and spooky things.

This is solely the reason why i never vape in public places, call me a bit of a weirdo but i just dont do it because to many people associate it with smoking and i dont want to be looked at as someone who smokes. I have vaped in bars in the past but i havent particulary enjoyed it, odd looks and always wondering whether someone is going to approach me or something. Prefer doing it in my own surroundings or in large areas such as on the street

I don't go out enough to ask to vape in pubs. I don't think I would either, I'm still used to going outside to smoke and really prefer being there for the five minutes of peace (even if it is -12c right now).

If I'd asked permission from someone and got the ok, then they kicked up a stink about it, I probably would have argued it down as well, and left.

I had to laugh at the article where it said "medical experts" need to know more about what's in ecigs. Well, pg/pga/vg some nicotine and some flavouring. What else do you need to know? Am I a chemical expert now I've identified what's in an ecig? :glare:

Cowardice is a bit strong isn't it? Pat's got just as much right to choose not to vape indoors as anyone who wants to ask before they use it or just vape and ask for forgiveness if anyone pulls them up about it. It's a personal choice and it's unfair to call it cowardice to choose not to vape indoors in public.

Hi Nashy,
Not trying to lobby for 'e-cigs'. I was and still am of the same opinion. I got myself an e-cig to stop smoking, which I have done having spent nearly 20 years of my life doing so. I felt that the bar manager was fundamentaly wrong in his decision, how he went about making it and the manner in which he imposed it - that is why I went to the local press.

I know many smokers, many who want to quit and many who have never heard of an e-cig. So far, I have helped 10 family members quit by showing and demonstrating the e-cig to them. I hope to help many more by using this article to raise awareness.

Oh no haha, I was referring to:

Sorry for not being clear about that.
