I am getting a very faint burning scent even after adding more liquid to the carto. Is that usually a sign that the carto is dead, or am I just doing something wrong? I am using Johnson Creek Red Oak because the PG liquid makes me feel horrible (headache, groggy feeling, and itching). The carto in question has hardly been used at all. Any suggestions?

Redbone and WomanOfHeart:

Do you both use the kr808 currently? I seem to be having more trouble with this thing than it's worth. What method do you each use for filling a new carto and refilling used cartos? Do I need to let them sit for days before they're ready to use? Maybe I'm just buying cartos from the wrong vendor, or are they all pretty much the same?

I use a 510 PT and an eGo, but the principle behind cartomizers is more or less the same. They're designed to be disposable. Some might last longer than others, but they all eventually give out at some point. Since I use the eGo Mega cartomizers, the way I have to fill them is to use a syringe. It takes some getting used to, but it's not all that difficult once you get used to them. If you're using a soft tipped cartomizer, you should be able to just pop off the cap with a paperclip, tilt the cartomizer slightly and drip juice down the side on to the filler like you're pouring a beer. Have you tried switching to cartridges, rather than using cartomizers? That might be a better option for you.

I used the original 808 cartomizers (with the white filling inside)
It does burn when it gets too dry. I tore one apart one day after cleaning it, and right in the middle, was a nice burn hole.

Cleaning, btw, is really easy. Boil them for 5, rinse, boil again, rinse. Blow them out, let them sit for a day to dry out. They take approximately 20 -25 drops to refill. They only need to sit for a few minutes to settle. You fill them till they look good and spongy moist, not soupy, but spongy. As long as you keep them wet, they will do you well, I used mine for over two months with no issue, could have kept on using them, but I wasn't digging that burn hole.

Best method is the second you get an "icky" taste, it means it's time to top them off.

It's why I switched over to the CE2's with no filling in it. Cleaner tasting, easier to clean (just a flush out with some warm/hot water, blow out, dry burn a couple of times, refill and move along) and, no burning.

Thanks, I'll have to try to find some and give them a try maybe. It just seems that with these cartos from puresmoker.com that I'm either constantly over-filling and getting the gurgling and very little vapor, or I'm under-filling and getting a burnt taste and scent. Sometimes when there is vapor, it seems extremely hot and stings my throat and nose. Maybe I'm over-using the thing and that could be the problem. I was a pack-and-a-half-per-day kind of guy, so I'll admit I want to use the thing more than I probably should. I just don't know at this point, and I'm getting more and more frustrated as each day passes. Maybe I should just try quitting completely again. That's why I wanted to try these though; Quitting altogether has never seemed to work well for me because I still want the nicotine badly.

Tresrottn: I found the CE2's on VaporJunction, and already done a little reading on them. They sound great assuming they do work as well as everyone says. Have you had good luck with them, and can they truly be used "time and time again" as VJ states? If so, I'm ordering some today. They are twice the price of the "regular" cartos I've gotten from Puresmoker.com, but if they really do last for repeated filling, I guess the price difference shouldn't be a concern.

P.S. I'm not trying to promote VaporJunction in any way, that's just the first vendor site I found them on.

Thank all of your for your help and suggestions. Everyone on ECF has been so friendly and helpful.

I've been using Vapor for Life Cartomizers for almost 4 months(not the same ones). Some of them last for refill after refill, and cleaning after cleaning and some don't. Once a carto is burnt I throw it out. You can't really get the taste out. If I get a small taste of burnt, cleaning it will usually fix it. Once it's really pretty burnt its done.

Here is a You tube page for cleaning cartomizers.YouTube - cleaning cartomizers

And here is one for filling cartomizers.YouTube - filling cartomizers

I have a KR8 PT I purchased from litecig.com along with 5 blank cartomizer. I started vaping the KR8 after crappy vaping from Blu my first ecig. With the first blank Carto I too got that burnt taste and it burned the crap out of my throat. After watching all the Youtube reviews on different PV and about throat hit, I knew either I had done something wrong, or I wasnt ready for that kind of throat hit. So after I recovered a couple of days later. I decided to try again with a fresh carto, Now I am in vaping heaven. So I too dont know what I did wrong, if it was a crappy carto or I overfilled it or underfilled it or what. Thanks for the link on cleaning the cartos youtube. Going to watch that now. But I do have one question. How long should a cartomizer last before I offically should move on to a new carto?

Their lifespan really varies. I don't know why. I have some that I don't even know how many times I have cleaned and some that conk out after the first cleaning. In my experience the tube in the center degenerates and then they don't draw well any more. The biggest pit fall to cleaning that I have seen is not letting them dry before refilling them. You get steam instead of vapor with no flavor. It gets humid here during the summer so I bake them in the oven at 225 for an hour or so (without the white caps and battery end down in a baking dish with an inch of dry rice at the bottom) and them let them sit in the dry hot oven till it cools down. If your in a dry climate you probably don't have to bother with this.
