Lavatube battery compatibility and safety.

I mainly use an ego-c but I decided to try out a variable voltage mod so I purchased a lavatube style VV from Totally Wicked but I have never used a mod before. I have been seeing a lot of scary stuff about AW IMR 18650 batteries so I'm trying to find out which "protected" 18650 will fit my new mod. The specs on the TW website say the battery dimensions are 18mm by 65mm and I found an AW 18650 Protected 2600 mAh Rechargeable Lithium Battery but its dimensions are 18.52 X 68.16mm ( +/- 0.3mm ). My question is will the AW 18650 Protected 2600 mAh Rechargeable Lithium Battery fit in my lavatube and if not than what is a relatively safe 18650 battery to use for my mod?

The IMR 18650 is, in my opinion, safer by a whisker than the "protected" version. Why do I say that? Because lets say you drop a protected 18650 and damage the protection circuit, and then have a failure. The battery might well explode in your face. The IMR 18650, on the other hand, will get very hot with a dead short, but not explode due to it being a "safe chemistry" battery. I guess there are no "safe" lithium batteries, but I would say the IMR is a bit safer. Others might very well disagree though. :)

By the way - welcome to ECF!

Protected batteries and IMR "high-drain" batteries are 2 different things.

It is recommended to use a high-drain battery in the lavatube. The AW protected battery that you mentioned is not a high-drain battery. High-drain batteries are generally not protected batteries bc their considered "safer chemistry" sonthey don't need protected circuitry. Protected batteries are generally slightly longer bc of the protection circuitry, and the one you mentioned won't fit in your lavatube, or at least you won't be able to screw the cap all the way down.
The stuff you hear about batteries exploding, etc is not with nihm batteries which are the batteries that are considered safer chemistry.
For your lavatube you want to get an AW IMR 18650 battery
