Hi there. I was just wondering if anyone out there uses standard Li-Ion batteries in their mods. I am not reffering to a mechanical mod, but rather to their use in something such as a Vamo. There are those who say you must use teh 'safe-chemisry' AW IMR batteries (LI-Mn). I do not want to blow myself up or harm myself in any way, but have been using standard Li-Ion batteries so far with no adverse effects. So am I the only one or is there others that use standard batteries. Thank you.

I use a high capacity panasonic 3400 mAh li-ion for one of my tube mods, and the MVP uses a poly-litho battery, if I'm not mistaken. I think I only have 14500 batteries that are IMR, maybe a couple 18650s. Haven't blown up, yet.

I'll ask WHY you are using standard Li-ion batteries in your Vamo. If you visit the product descriptions on vendor web sites the recommendation often is to use IMR or "high drain" batteries in the regulated mod.

Why high drain batteries? Regulated mods use boost circuitry in their processors to achieve higher voltage. They accomplish this with the use of PWM (pulse width modulation). This requires batteries that can provide up to twice the amps than the end voltage will be. ICR batteries will not have the higher amps required to allow the use of PWM. The engineers at Provape offered this explanation on "why high drain" batteries for the Provari : http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/provape/334831-technical-why-high-drain-batteries.html

Will a Li-ion battery "work" in a mod like a Vamo. Yes it probably will, but it is not the ideal battery to use, and you will be cheating yourself from experiencing your mod's optimal performance by using one of those batteries.

As long as the drain is within the batteries specification there is no problem, those big 3+ Ah 18650's typically have C of 2 so they are good up to 6 amps.

Using them in regulated mods is a whole other topic though. To put it very simply, the way the boost regulating circuits work is they charge up an inductor and then unload it to the storage capacitor (or straight to the atty) in quick bursts many times per second. Many of the cheaper mods lack an input and output capacitor (lack of output one causes the "rattlesnake" sound for example) and this can cause those quick draws to put a lot of undue strain on the battery since the amperage can swing up to 20+ amps at the peak of the draw. So essentially, unless you know for a fact that your mod uses an input cap big enough to dampen the draw fluctuations, its much recommended that you use a high drain type battery.
