I just got my first rebuildable today and just coiled it up. 500 SS mesh and 30 guage wire 4/3 wrap. I'm using 50/50 juice. Got rid of all the hot spots. It's running at 1.4 ohm. I've vaped it up to 11 watts and there's pretty minimal throat hit, though flavor and vapor production are nice.

I tried searching this subforum but nothing came up. What can I do to get better TH. I tried adjusting the air hole slightly off of the wick/coil, but it just tastes a little burnt with no increase in TH. I've heard there's a break in period for the wick/coil. If this is true, I definitely have not vaped it long enough to have broken it in FWIW.

Yes the break in period is true it takes me 2-3 tanks on a RBA to get to hitting like it should. So "STAY CALM AND VAPE ON"

EDIT: also make sure the wick is not touching the center post or the bottom plate. And make sure ur wick is not super tight in the wick hole. You should be able to move it up and down freely.

and here is a great video by ZEN on setting up a RBA http://youtu.be/Qzi50Vzg-J8

A properly set up genny actually has a very silky smooth throat hit...so congrats you have a good set up. By slightly adjusting the air hole placement you should get more throat hit...but you might have to lower the wattage a little to avoid the burnt taste. You can also up the PG level or the nicotine level. Once the coil breaks in the vape should be richer...so have little patience. You can speed up the break in process by doing wet burns....5 x 10 second burns should break in the coil. Tilt the device while doing the burns.

i also believe in the more smother throat hit theory with the gennys, also i believe you do have a good set-up there. when ever i have tried a higher resistant set-ups, just to remind me of how much i dont like them (because i believe gennys work better at lower resistances) i have found that with a higher res coil and higher volts, that the TH does increase, to me its more of a harshness though i guess it equates to more of a TH in my opinion. personally i wouldnt stray from your set-up to a higher res set-up, though if you really wanted more of a throat hit more volts might do it.

Thanks all.

New question though. I changed out the juice in my tank and did a dry burn before refilling it and had some hotspots which I took care of. The next tank had more throat hit, and actully better vapor and flavor too. I can assume from this that as my wick settled into place the hotspots developed but I couldn't see them since the coil was saturated. How can I prevent or mitigate hotspots that develop through use of the tank?

Might be break-in, and might just be the juice. Maybe both.

Incidentally, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it specifically yet, but you'll get more throat hit the farther you move the air hole from the wick.

you might get more of a throat hit with off centering the air hole but to me it is more of a harshness then a real TH when you do this, besides less vapor. as far as a new HS showing up after filling up the tank, well after the first few tweeks, it really doent happen anymore. after you set-up your device initially, and check for HS, you may or may not find them, if you do you take care of them before adding juice to your tank. i find that most will add juice to early. i however will keep pulsing the coils for a little longer, this kind of heats things up, so i let the device cool down for a minute then pulse again just to see if eveything is still ok. now that everything is looking good then you add some juice, but still i find out that after some addition time they may appear, so it may take one more time for adjustments , so what you need to do is after vaping half of a tank or less, tilt the atty away from wick, thus moving the juice away from the it. by doing this and pulsing eventually the wick will glow like before when there was no juice in it, re-adjust one more time and you should be go to go for weeks.
