I'm just getting into DIY, two of my first six tries are good, and the others mostly just need tweaking on the amount of flavoring, but I also think that two would benefit by a little vanilla added. I've been adding a bit of a good Madagascar Vanilla commercial liquid, and it definitely helps, but I don't have a lot of it and I'm looking at scaling up to larger batches soon.

Now, for a little bit of background, I've been baking for 50 years or so, and one thing I know is how the quality of vanilla can vary. I've never found an artificial vanilla that I liked, and in the real ones I prefer a good Madagascar or Tahitian. Vanillin tastes flat and a little metallic to me, I think because it's only one chemical part of the flavor.

So, what brand of flavoring do you think has the best real vanilla flavor? Not custard, or cream, or Bavarian, just vanilla? I'm pretty open as far as supplier goes, since I don't really need much (anything, really) else right now, so I'm probably going to be paying more for the shipping than for the flavor anyhow.

I've bought/tried every vanilla flavoring I could find on-line, about two dozen in all, and the only one of them that tastes like straight vanilla is "HOLY Vanilla" from DIY flavor shack. No cream, custard, coconut, cake or perfume chemical taste, just straight vanilla. If you decide you want a French vanilla, vanilla cream or vanilla custard flavoring there are several good choices available.

I'm a very picky when it comes to Vanilla and most of the flavors just don't cut it.

Try Inawera Vanilla and see if you like it.

The best tasting vanilla I've tried was Watkins Pure Vanilla Extract. The problem was it has a glucose syrup (corn syrup?), which is fine for baking and so forth, but gunks an atty so fast it'll make your head swim lol. I was using an rda and by two ml, the coil was totally gunked. Tasted great but just not usable.

It seems that most of the less expensive extracts have the added syrup or least I can't find any that don't. The ones I found that don't seem pretty expensive to me.

There's several threats on here about extracting you own, and that may be the best option for true vanilla flavor.

I'm pretty happy with TFA Vanilla Swirl and Inawera Wanilia (Vanilla), but as others have mentioned, they're not true vanillas.

Good to know. I read a little in some to the 'extract your own' threads, but I don't recall reading about how it turned out for those who tried it. They claimed they were going to post back when it finished steeping but if any did, I must have missed it.

I've done a number of Vanilla Extracts, but the Vanilla burns it can't handle the heat.

TPA Vanilin is the best I've had, hear Hangsen is the best.
