I have a buddy real into vaping. Really into it. there are a WHOOOOLE lot of things I don't understand, and I don't want to build some crazy thing, I want to know what tastes solid and will work for me.

I'm looking for something pretty low maintenance: I don't want to have to drop drips of something onto something. I'm a pipe and hookah smoker, so filling a tank isn't a big deal, a little maint is fine, but not constantly, I work from home and am on the phone a lot, I want something I can use and hold with one hand.
And preferably, with good battery life.

And also, maybe too much to ask here, but any melon that isn't watermelon, flavored juice I could go ahead and grab right away? the review of the e-light makes it sound pretty solid, but I'm unclear if i can readily refill the carts with other fluid.

I'm honestly very confused, and before I dig in too hard, I want to know what's easy to use but doesn't suck so I don't get soured on the whole thing, so I can give it a shot and see if I'd prefer this over pipe.

So.... any recommendations? Best place to buy whatever would be a good choice where I can get it all at once and get started?

Simplist and most satisfying startup kit would be in this link. Link to buy everything is within the article. Watch the tutorial video at the end, too: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/baditude/3706-4-good-starters-setup-beginning-vapor.html

There are several options of juice delivery devices to pick from to put on the batteries. I would recommend a Vivi Nova tank to begin with; easy to fill and should last an entire day. In this link you will find descriptions, pics, and demo videos: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/baditude/3230-1-proper-terminology-carto-tank-what-primer-juice-delivery-attachments.html

vivinovamini-twist.jpg Ego battery with Vivi Nova tank.

Try the fruit flavors at Dripeez, that's their specialty. Figure on consuming 3 - 5 ml of juice daily.

This is a nice kit for the price. http://uniquecigs.com/products-page/starter-kits/itaste-vv-express-kit-coming-soon/

You get a variable voltage battery, a iClear 16, and a bottle of juice for $50.00. You will want to add additional batteries once you decide that you like it. But this battery is a passthrough so you can vape while it charges if you are at a computer.

For a little more, you can go with KGO CE5 Kit - uniquecigs.com. You get 2 great batteries and 2 clearomizers with a free bottle of juice.

I like the look of that kit and the simplicity a lot. I'm not really sure I want to be toying with variable voltage and wattage and such insanity right away, too much complexity may sour me on it.

I live to tinker. I'm into bitcoin mining and system building because I seriously just love to tinker for optimal effect efficiency, whatever. down the road, some of this hardcore stuff will be awesome, and I can tell you right now I will be back here after I have the hang of it to lurk and post so many questions, and probably eventually start moving forward with these insane custom built things, but that's not where I want to start: my smoking now is cram tobacco in pipe, thumb tamp to roughly 1/3, fill, thumb tamp to fill line, light, tamp flat, light, smoke. When the pipe is gone, clean, lather, rinse, repeat.I probably smoke 3-6 pipes full a day, roughly a chamber class 4-ish. it's been sliiightly widened by reaming a little too hard to get out some rough edges. all in all, I probably spend about a half an hour a day maintaining it total, between smokes. what I saw in this video looks like a lot less work, and besides charging and refilling it's pretty much good to go. And it looks nice and simple. Thanks!

Regarding the other suggestions, any reason why I might take one of these on instead, or an advantage over this one above?

Halo & Volt kits are small & versatile.
You can put it in a pcc to keep it handy & charged.
Mini tank options are available for both.
Prefilled carto flavors are good. Very handy when you don't want to mess with filling. Small form factor is great for driving or at work.

Are these not kr808d-1 kits you are recommending?

I'd definitely recommend a 510 threaded kit, many more juice delivery systems will be available to the new vaper. The 808 batteries will severely limit options. Why cut his bawls off to start with?

You can purchase an eGo battery that isn't variable voltage. Single voltage batteries put out somewhere around 3.7 volts when fully charged, but as the battery drains the voltage will drop down and you may notice your vapor to be less.

With variable voltage, you can adjust the voltage to different flavors you might have. For instance, my fruit flavors taste better between 3.4 and 3.7 volts. My coffee flavors taste better between 4.0 and 4.5 volts. A couple of Cinnamon flavors are best around 5 volts. Plus, as the battery charge falls, you can add more voltage to keep the vapor satisfying.

Getting a variable voltage battery from the start just helps saving some money down the road from needing an upgrade. You don't have to adjust it if you don't want to, just keep it around 3.7 volts and not worry about it. But its always there if you want it. It's not that much more to get a variable voltage battery from the get go.

I forgot to mention. Batteries are rated in mAh. This gives an estimate in how long to expect a battery to keep a charge. 100 mAh is equal to 1 hour. So a 650 mah battery should give you around 6.5 hours of use.

No major advantage. I don't know how many mah the battery in the picture is, but the KGO kit I suggested is 1100mah. Like said before, more mah = longer life.

The $12 Katana from Vape Dojo would be a nice cheap starter kit. I would just buy two of them.

Too many options just create confusion.
The 808 kits mentioned are very simple and work out of the box without any fiddling. Despite having several 510 mods with RBAs, carto tanks and other stuff, I still use the 808 stuff as my daily vape just because they're so simple and never have to fiddle with them.

And the options aren't that limited. SI has cartos, CE3s, Stardust style clearos, and T3s. Pretty much all the small form factor stuff that's popular because they just work.

For me, 510 stuff is what I play with, 808 stuff is what I use. And that's what the OP was asking for. Something he could use without any fiddling to get started and 808 kits are excellent for that.

Joyetech Ego-C starter kit. Really simple and works good. You can buy many places online. I bought at myfreedomsmokes.com and all was good

Adding my 2 cents on htis one

The BAtteries for the ego_C are great 1000 mah batteries. Get the version of the kit with the clearomizers and NOT the ego tank system.

I started with the ego tank system and had suck a mess with leaking, suddenly burnt atomizers (at $5 a pop) and frequent refills that I ditched the tank system 2 weeks in and bought myself some Redux CE5 clones (from the same MyFreedomsmokes site). Save yourself the nightmare get the clearos to start.

I couldn't have said this any better myself.
OP you have your answer.

2 agree with you. The rest here have suggested Ego stuff. But believe what you want, it keeps you from reaching your potential.

Suggesting prefilled cartos and 808 threads to a new vapor? Not smart.

It limits their juice delivery choices, it makes them a muppet for V2, SI, Greensmoke and the like.

(theres the STRAIGHT SHOT)

Smokeless Image is a good company to deal with, my wife started on a Volt. But she was never a big cig smoker. Not many big sales with them though, proprietary pricing somewhat.

Halo may be fine too, not familiar. But most delivery systems are made for 510 devices, thats why I recommend 510's. Most people move up, not all.

Probably scared the guy away by now.

I have a question. I have a 510 system I use for work, etc. I prefer prefilled for it (despite a limitation of juice choices). Given the limitations, how does one determine the threading system for systems? Many, or most, sites that have prefilled are trying to sell the whole kit and don't seem to mention what they are using. How does one find out?

Well unless they tell you you don't know for the most part. The good news is Blu and Fin both are 510. Also if you have a manual battery there are adapters that cost maybe $2-4 that let you convert between most threadings to most other threadings.

For example I have an adapter that lets me uses my KR808 threaded clearomizers on my 510 threaded ego batteries. Many places sell them.

Based on baditude's suggestion (and their being a video in the tutorial) I went with the stuff he recommended:
AltSmoke.com | eGo Spinner Variable Voltage Battery | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs |
AltSmoke.com | Smok Tech Single Coil Black Cartomizers 1.7 ohm, 2.0 ohm, 2.5 ohm, 3.2 ohm | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs |
AltSmoke.com | Vision Clearomizer - AltSmoke | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs |
AltSmoke.com | Flat Tip Drip Tips - 510/Yeti/901 | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs |
AltSmoke.com | Strawberry Fuzz | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs | (Ordered some dripeez but wanted something to COME with the stuff)
AltSmoke.com | eGo Series - USB Battery Charger | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs |

So, I get it, I watch the videos, I fill my clearomizer and my cartomizer per videos I watch.
I pull the thing off the charger assuming it must've come with some charge and ten minutes is fine....

Put it all together, and turn it on, and it seriously tastes like burn hair. Not strawberries. I guess it does say "fuzz" but I'm feeling like I must be doing something wrong.

In every video they fill and go straight on with smoking. Do I need to let brand new cartomizers or clearomizers rest before smoking them?
Did I ruin them already having gotten horrible burny flavor? Each retry is no better.

Currently the tanks are sitting facing "up" with the part you suck on up, while my battery charges (I have no idea how to tell when it's done, it has a red light on, no green flash, and the white light is still lit. No instructions came with it.)

And I want to know if there is something I can do to make this taste less like smoked chest hair.

EDIT
I'd like to throw in there that I don't smoke cigs, occasionally I'll get some cloves shipped over from indonesia, but I generally smoke pipe. Aromatics, but the dryest I can find, so I'm pretty used to a pretty harsh and hot experience, compared to a filtered or light cigarette. This is far, far beyond the bad taste of a cigarette though, this is terrible.
I started with 2.4% nicotine because..... I smoke pipe pretty much all day, I figured that would be a rough equivalent to unfiltered pipe tobacco.
