So after buying all of my vaping gear online for years, I went to a brick and mortar last week and impulsively bought a Tobeco Kayfun Lite + clone. The shop owner threw in some Kanthal and organic cotton for free and I was on my way home, thinking I'd effortlessly build a coil in 2 minutes (how naive). I watched a bunch of YouTube videos, and then got to work. A few hours later, I had a sliced-open thumb bleeding everywhere, I couldn't tighten the block on the deck to stop it from spinning, and I gave up.

Well, tonight I put on my big boy pants, tried it again from scratch, and successfully built an ugly 1.2 ohm coil. And lo and behold, it was the best vape I've ever had. :D

Of course, I got dry hits after a few minutes, and I'd rather punch myself in the face than do this all over again at my present skill level. But I'm intrigued. So I want to pick up something much more simple, with less fiddly parts, to get better at building coils on. I would love your suggestions, o wise ones.

- is there another cheap reputable tank out there that's rebuildable but has less working parts?

- Or, should I maybe try a dripper? The IGO-L or Phoenix or something? I never dripped with the old school 510 atties because you had to drip more CONSTANTLY, but I've read that the newer ones can hold up to a ml of liquid.

I'm looking for something with only 2 screws and made for a single coil, and sold by US vendors. Thanks!

The kayfun is VERY finicky when it comes to building. At least the clones are. If the wicking or the build is not "correct", you'll have some issues, whether it be leaking or dry hits. The easiest atomizers to learn how to build coils on are simple drippers, IMO. An Igo-W will make it much easier. Holes in the posts and a good amount of room to build. The Spirit RDA is another good one. Large deck, slightly deeper well than the Igo and the screws seem to cut less kanthal than my Igo-W screws.

I started out on the igo-L's and fell in love with dripping. They are super easy to build. I was just watching a video 30 min. ago about the kayfun lite and although it is a bit long, it was really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_5tJwK8CUk

I must say that I just recently started using a reo and a rm2 atomizer and I really can't imagine vaping getting any better. But I so enjoyed the igo-L's as my first experience with dripping. I just got the $7 igo-L from Fasttech. Dripping has pretty much ruined me for anything else now. Good luck to ya and happy dripping.

I think you should get a stillare clone its super easy to build on and it vapes just as good as those 100+ dollar drippers
I got mine from local bm for 26 bucks you might find it cheaper logically it make since buy a nice one for cheap then when you get good at building you won't have to throw it in the drawer the thing is a beast

I agree the Kayfun can be a little difficult to get it rite I tried many builds and they were problematic I have never had leaking issues
If you follow the build video I posted to the tee The kayfun will perform like it should Excellent It worked for me and others here on the forum when no other builds did It's worth a try :)
If you want to try a Dripper the Helios is one of the easiest to build :)

Cool, it sounds like I was on the right track, as there are lots of recommendations for an IGO here. I think I'll buy an L. (Starting off, I just want to do single coils, so no sense in buying a W yet.)

I did find it interesting that no one recommended any other tanks. What do people think of the Squape?

I'll add another vote for the Igo-L. Single coil dripper. Cheap. Pretty hard to screw up. You might also consider the Igo-S which is the same design but smaller. Can be modified rather easily to be a bottom fed dripper to use on the Reo. There are threads in the Reo subforum about it. Either may be a bit difficult to find from a domestic vendor.

Another cheap and easy to build dripper is the Smok octopus, or the smaller version the squid. Should be able to find these for $10 from domestic vendors.

Getting any RDA will definitely help you improve by giving you an open deck to build on. Its also easy to take apart and rebuild without having to worry about rebottling or wasting juice.

The real skill to focus on, IMO, is not the coiling itself, but focus on wicking. The ugliest coil still fires if the positive and negative posts are connected right. But a poorly wicked system (RDA and Kayfun) will give you a poor vaping experience.

The SQuape clone was a bust for me. It looks good, and had potential, but the draw on it as it comes out of the box is totally unusable, and I've tried two different bases with the same result. I drilled one out so that the draw was nice, but by the second build I went to put in it, the deck shorted out.

I remember pbusardo saying that they were working on an improved air flow version, but I won't be a buyer of clone or authentic until it gets it's airflow from the side and not the 510.

I figured I'd just write an update in my old thread, rather than starting a new one.

So I went to a local B&M today that I'd never been to, just to look around. I told the guy at the store that I wanted a 2-post RDA to build single coils on, and he said he didn't have any, so he suggested a Patriot clone. It was only $15 so I said that was fine. Then he drilled a couple new air holes and told me I'd like it a lot more that way, and I was on my merry way. As soon as I got home I built a coil, threw some cotton in it, and gave it a shot. And... it was way too airy. Running a single coil with multiple drilled holes is just too loose for me personally (although the vapor was insane). I can block a hole with a piece of tape but it looks ghettotastic.

At least it was a learning experience, because after taking a closer look at what the guy did, I can tell he's just used to drilling holes for dual coil setups (because each hole would line up with a coil). But with 1 coil it's just too much air.

So, it was back to the drawing board on the ol' internet. I just ordered an IGO-L and a Smok Octopus, and I'm pretty confident I'll like them. I should've just done this in the first place a week ago. :p
