I have been ordering these pre made wicks from some place but when I change them ,my battery keeps telling me 'low ohms'. It's proper doing my head in ,and help would be gratefully accepted

Each mod (battery) has a top and bottom limit. For example :The Kanger Subbox mini will fire down to .3 ohm. This means it will not fire (heat up) a .29 ohm coil. When a low ohm coil (.29 in this example) is tried in a tank with that mod (battery) it will give a "low ohm" reading and will not work.

Even though I have been vaping for nearly 3 years ,I have only just started trying a cheaper way of doing it (after spending a fortune on coils) ,so please excuse my ignorance as I have no idea what all the technical terms mean

The 2.2 ohm coils should work on the iStick without an issue. I don't know why it wouldn't work unless the coil has shorted out or something. It's also very possible you got a bad batch of coils. @Susan~S ?

On another note, have you ever tried coiling your own coils? With a tank like the Kanger Subtank Mini (for example) you can use the rba (rebuildable atomizer) and re coil and re wick very inexpensively. You can even make them higher ohm coils like the 2.2 you are now using. (higher ohm means less power, less juice used) I'm certain there are many tanks out there that would do this for you.

Do your coils resemble this one:

Yes ,they are the ones I am using ,the last few wicks I have bought ,I have had the same problem ( low ohms ). Is it the thickness of the wire that determines the ohms ? Sorry for sounding thick

It's a combo of the thickness of the wire and the length. Simply stated it's a measure of how much difficulty the electricity has going from a to b (through the coil) and the measurement (resistance) is called ohms.

I am not up to date on the starter level Kanger coils. It is possible you simply got a bad batch of coils which is causing the issue. I couldn't find any info on what resistance the iStick Mini could fire down to, but the 30 watt istick will fire down to .4 ohms, and 2.2 ohm Kanger Coils are well above that. Wish I could be more help.

If you ever think about a new tank you should consider the Aspire Nautilus Mini. (it uses 1.6 and 1.8 ohm coils)

I have seen a weird short on those coils, when old though. It occurs to me you might hit them with too much power and screw them up immediately. Start at 3.6V or 5 watts and don't go over 7 watts. Check resistance on the mod before firing. Only other thing I can think of is a little bit of metal down in your connector or adaptor or something's defective.
