LR Atty Woes

Setup: I'm rocking a Riva 510 650mah with Joye 510 LR 2.0 attys (all from Liberty-Flights.com).
Method: Kind of a hybrid drip/cart combo that works for me.
juice: High nic High VG

The first atty I tried hit nice. Rolled strong for a couple weeks then the vapor trailed off and I was getting a burnt taste. Finicky as well. I could put too much liquid in it to get the bad taste out but then it wouldn't get much vapor and would gurgle and draw stiff. When the vapor was big and drew smooth it would taste burnt and crappy with greatly reduced flavor. So I said screw this and opened a new one.

Second NEW atty hits great. But what the hell... same problem with burnt taste and no flavor. I had to flood it and get a couple good tasting puffs, but crap vapor. When it vaped really hard and proper like it should, proper fizzling sound and all, that damn burnt taste. Whats going on here? To be clear, this is on a brand new atty that I blew out the stupid priming fluid on well.

So I flushed em with water, soaked a bit, dry burned. Popped the new second one. Was more careful with my original and, although it didn't pop, it still vapes like poo. I think I killed most of the burnt taste but it's moot.

So is it me or the atties? Are these Joye LR ones not the best for my Riva? I will note that the regular stock atties that came with my starter kit got boiled and dry burned and they are now running like frackin champs. To make things more confusing for me I see that the stock atty's I'm using from my starter are 2.0, the LR EM Riva attys they sell are 1.5? Should I have got those instead? (they were sold out and still are).

I hate attys. They are so nice when you first meet them and then they stab you in the back.

My attys sit and wait for me to buy new juices I need to test or for me to get in the mood to drip a thick liquid. I use cartomizers w/ thin clear juices for 98% of my vaping.

If you want to use attys with VG and not get burnt taste

1 - thin your juice so it flows as fast as you vape it (w/ PG or distilled water)
2 - give the juice long enough to get to the coil
3 - keep your attys clean
4 - don't use dark/opaque/cloudy juices or any other juice that drops flavoring sediment

I bought so many juices trying to find a cocoa or cocoa tobacco with no sediment. I now use V4L WOWbacco which is a thin clear juice, maybe 80PG/20VG, and not real strong flavor but a nice mellow cocoa with very little tobacco taste (so little I can vape it in my fiance's car and just tell him it's cocoa and he hate tobacco but doesn't notice any).

I got a killer smelling B52 liquid at Vaporbomb but as soon as I looked at its opaque contents I knew it was full of sediment. But one of these days I will sacrifice a carto to it. Certainly not an atomizer when a whole pack of cartos costs about what one cheap atty costs.

Still - if a juice doesn't vape right off on a new atty - I would suspect the atty or insufficient priming with liquid rather than the juice. Dark sediment filled juices don't gunk up an atty immediately and you can try to slow it down by rinsing the atty every night. I suspect more the high amount of VG and slow wicking for any immediate problem. Did you get the primer off the atty? New attys usually have nasty tasting primer on them. And how about using a thinner juice to get the coil nice and wet and then trying your thicker one? Or put a bit of your thick juice in a little bottle and add a drop or two of distilled water and try that to break the atty in?

I've seen WOWbacco mentioned before but the PG is too high. I haven't got around to my experiment to see if this is true or not but I might be one of the lucky ones that is allergic to PG. My face and scalp have been getting real itchy. Back and random areas as well. I have this one juice which is VG but it's more watery then the others from this supplier and I've suspected that there is PG in the flavoring? Just a theory so far. Maybe it's from something else or random/coincidental. But for now I am going to stick to VG until I can figure this out.

WELCOME TO THE ECF

Just a few questions for you. Did you prime your atomizer before you used it?

It's a good idea to clean it after a days worth of use. Since, you used it for a few weeks then, more than likely your coil/wick is gunked up. Oh, what type of atomizer are you using? If it's a 510 or 306 then it's best to remove the wick or in other words de-wicking it, in order to completely eliminate the burnt flavor.

It's fine to use 100%VG or whatever you want in an atomizer. You just have to maintain it properly to get optimal performance from it.

Wanted to add that dry burning has it's risks as you've found out. It's best to use one second bursts of power, a few times to get the coil heated (to get the dry juice off of it turning it to ash). Then letting it rest for a few minutes after you dry burned it a little bit. Just to let the coil cool off.

If you overdo it at this time then you can pop the coil. You can actually feel the atty getting fairly hot which is a good sign to let it rest.

To get rid of the burnt taste, make the following mix in a cup/bowl...white vinegar and baking soda. Drop in attys. Let them sit for 30 minutes. Remove and rinse in hot water. Add a couple drops of lemon juice to them. Let sit for another 20 minutes. Rinse well in hot water. Add a few drops of unflavored pg or vg and let sit for 5 mintes. Vape off the unflavored without inhaling. The unflavored will remove any of the vinegar or lemon flavoring still hanging in there. Let dry overnight. Now drip 6-7 drops of your favorite juice into it and let sit 15 minutes to prime the atty. Start vaping.
