Hello,

Here is a quick one. Hope this is the right spot to start the discussion.

This is in no way all inclusive to my particular mech, nor do I want the discussion to be, but I am using a Surefire knurled satin king mod. Just in case this does matter for this comparison.

So I bought a magnet "upgrade" with two magnets for my king. I feel like it is now less repeatable performance. With the spring it fires exactly the same every single time. Not only that, but it feels stronger with the spring.

My question is, is a magnetic upgrade always an upgrade? If so, what is going on here???

Thanks,

It's an upgrade when it works the same performance wise, yet eliminates the mechanical scrunching of a spring, both by feel and by sound. You said the travel is the same, but is the tension of the throw the same too? Is there some way to adjust the distance between the magnets?

It could be the spring was helping to complete the circuit by providing an extra piece of contacting metal in addition to the copper contacts. The magnets shouldn't actually touch when fired, so it is up to just the contacts.

Also, a spring has some bias to it, that when depressed the switch post is not absolutely level and hits the the switch tube a certain way relative to the spring. With magnets, the post is floating and performance is more dependent on the tolerances of the switch parts.

Lastly, are all the copper contacts clean? If it is hitting inconsistently, that means the connections aren't making that great of a contact which leads to more arcing which just makes them dirtier.

It is not a lost cause, but it sounds like it needs some tweaking.

It could be the spring was helping to complete the circuit

IMO, this is the answer ^^^. I had the same experience with my Nemesis. Put magnets in and it didn't take long and I was getting poor performance and miss-fires. Cleaned the switch parts and all was well for a few weeks and the same thing happened again. Previous to putting the magnets in I had been using it for a couple of months with no issues.

Looking at the switch design it became obvious to me the spring was part of the switch circuit. Without it there all you have is the outside diameter of the switch plunger making contact with the inside diameter of the surface it's sliding in.

I kept the magnets because I like the way they feel in the switch, but I accept that I need to clean more often because of them.
