Mooch has tested several Sony VTC4 batteries and found that they are only 23 amps continuous. Pulse ratings are worthless.

Sony VTC4 2000mAh 18650
Sony VTC4 2000mAh 18650 Retest Results...a great 23A 2100mAh battery

Sony VTC4 2000mAh "only use in battery packs" 18650
Sony VTC4 2000mAh "use only in packs" 18650 Test Results...identical to other genuine VTC4's

Battery pulse ratings are useless!

There are no 18650's with a genuine current rating over 30A!

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations for a Mechanical Mod
  • As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept.

OK so I shouldn't go below a 0.4? What about having the two batteries in parallel, does that change anything?

Efests are rewraps, Don't purchase. Your Sonys in a parrallel mod are fine.
Divide resistance into voltage of your battery to compute current. Better yet, put some time into Ohms Law..
Ok. Still confused on the parallel part. So when I divide the resistance into the volts do I double it since there are 2?
I actually ordered this mod for a girl at work. It's what she wanted, but she's also inexperienced in mechs. I don't use them myself, so I'm just trying to figure it out so she doesn't hurt herself with it

Should I not even use these Sony VTC's since I don't think they are IMR?

Dont take this wrong, but did you take time to read the links badditude provided?
Most of your questions are fully covered and explained.

Following the crowd instead of educating yourself when using a mech will get you hurt.
Its not complicated, but it is very important.

Slow down, read, and learn.
We are here to help.

The mod you have is a parallel device.
VTCs are fine provided you build within their limits.
Learning how ohm's law apllies to vaping is a must with mechs.

Parallel mod increases run time, not voltage. Freshly charged battery 4.2 volts, don't double. BE sure it's a parallel mod.
Use a DMM to test voltage. STUDY. Ignorance may result in grave bodily injury..

Nic`d Up in Oklahoma!
60 amp pulse! ?

Don`t believe that. That could get you into serious trouble.

PS, ohms law is so simple a 5 yo could pick it up easy, it just takes a bit of commitment.

Voltage divided by resistance equals amps drawn (ohms law).
Going further,
Amps drawn times voltage equals watts used (JFYI).

0.4 ohm is the absolute lowest you should build to remain under the continuous discharge rate for any IMR/INR battery.

Series (batteries stacked end to end) will double the voltage output, but the capacity (mah) and amps will stay the same as using only one battery alone. Parallel (side by side) batteries will double the amp and mah capacity while the voltage output remains the same as using single battery.

Should I not even use these Sony VTC's since I don't think they are IMR?
The Sony batteries are known as an IMR hybrid, or INR (lithium nickle) chemistry. This is the most common battery chemistry for vaping currently.

Deeper Understanding of Mod Batteries Part 1
  • For those who want to learn the differences between IMR, IMR/hybrid, ICR, and LiPo batteries. What do those numbers and letters on batteries mean? What's an amp rating and why is it more important than the mAh rating when choosing a battery for vaping?

What are the best IMR 18650's recommend for mech mods? Is that what everyone uses those purple Efest cells for?
Purple Efest batteries are rewrap batteries (no way to know what cell is actually being used) and usually have exaggerated battery specs.

Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
  • A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes an important commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.
Below is a table of recommended batteries for vaping by our resident battery expert, @Mooch. Decide what amp limit battery you need, and then choose a brand/model.
