I assume from the coil pics that the battery powered the coil, vapor came out and everything got hot hot hot. So I'd agree with the above comments about the switch or some short bypassing the switch making an electrical connection through the mod.

If, OTOH, the coil didn't fire...that would indicate an internal battery failure. Possibly due to stressing that battery too much on a sub-ohm build with a non-high-drain-safe-chem battery.

Glad you're OK. I wouldn't use the mod again until I knew for certain what happened (the WHY it happened part).

I would never put loaded mechanical in my bag, especially a Caravela. User error.

I admire your forethought.

What concerns me about e-cigs in general....is that most people won't know any better. Particularly if they have locking rings designed to stop them from firing.

Basically....I wouldn't want e-cigs to be that unsafe. Ever. You SHOULD be able to put them in a bag if the locking ring is engaged.

I know, I know....accidents can happen with anything. Flashlights too. Other stuff. And some failures will happen...particularly with millions of users. But SHEESH!

The good news here is that it didn't go boom. The bad news is that the user unscrewed the shorted mod while hot with his shirt and having it in his hands.........(wow).

I totally agree with you. I wonder if the OP modded the top pin at all. The Caravela clones are really finicky to flush mount. I think the authentic one is too actually.

No I didn't mod the center pin in any way. I agree to a few noobish errors but with a lockring fully engaged this shouldn't happen.

Well, it's not like it spontaneously combusted. Which clone was it? I believe there's 3 and they all have different center pins and switches.

Actually, considering that a threaded lock ring is the only thing stopping a mech from firing, it should never be loaded with a battery and put away. All of mine never have a battery in them if they're not being used.

You know, it would be easy to come up with an engineering standard...maybe for flashlights too....for a plastic mesh (or other non-conductive but vented material) battery "holder" or "insert" so batteries don't short against sides of metal tubes. Would add maybe 1mm or so to the diameter of stuff. So you'd put the battery in a holder, and the holder into the mod. Won't fix a shorted switch though.

Edit: I searched and there are protected IMRs, which i never knew, but ive also never seen someone using them as compared to the countless unprotected AW IMR users!~
I use protected AW's in my mechs. Unprotected AW's in my ProVari. But I don't try to sub-ohm with either one.
I'm glad you caught it in time OP!

Any scratches in the wrapper of the battery? Is that battery in the pic the one that got hot? (Assuming the battery did get hot and not just the topper).
Yeah, I explained that poorly. I meant the contact on the switch. I'm going with the OP forgot to lock it theory though.
