Well I'm probably going to order some clone from FT. Do pretty much all the mechanicals accept a kick?
No... not all. If the tube is a large ID, you'll have to space the kick to get a good ground. Some mechs come with a "kick extension" if they are a fixed tube, while tele mechs may or may not unscrew far enough for a 18650 and a mech. I think the FT Nemesis clones come with kick extensions.

Yes it will. You'll probably want to check out lower resistance heads like the 2.2 ohm or the 1.8 ohm. A lower ohm coil will give you a warmer vape but will shorten charge life a little. As for the kick, I've run unregulated mods for years and regulated VV/VW is nice but It's NOT necessary for a good vape, plus the Magneto won't take an 18650 and a kick so you'll have to pick up smaller batteries to use it.

Yes some do use the PT on a mech. I have the Nemesis clone, chose it cause it is kickable in the 18650 mode too. If you get a kick, make sure you get the evolv kick 2, it accepts builds down to .5 ohms and will kick out 15 watts. Also has 2 ground posts and better power management then the original kick and the clones. I'll use the kick on builds higher than 1 ohm so that I can get 15 watts out of them. Sub ohms I generally go straight mech no kick.

Even though most mods will take kicks and all mods with a 510 will take a protank (however some don't have airflow channels for them gotta watch that) I don't see why anyone would buy a mech for a protank. you're better off getting a provari or even an ego twist than getting a mech and kick if you're not planning to use rebuildables in the future.

So I'm looking at getting a mechanical mod, and was wondering if I could run it with something like a ProTank.
Here are my Smoktech Magneto and Sigelei 8W with Protank 2s on top:

I've got them in 18650 mode using 18490 batteries with kicks.

We all have to start somewhere, and some start with a PT. I don't see why people use a PT on a Provari, but they do. I did at one point. One good reason that I can see of going mech + kick is you get a sexy looking mech with all the protection and consistent vape as a regulated mod, and have the option to go sub ohm in the future. I didn't start out on sub ohm builds when I first had a mech, had the rba's and was building first though. Didn't do the sub ohm till I had an rba that would deliver the goods at 30+ watts. Also after learning the amp limits on batteries, having the right equipment to test builds and batteries..... One doesn't just arrive at mechs, rba's and sub ohms without the proper education and research. Well some do, and I try to visit them in the burn wards when I can, but there is a lot to be said about protecting yourself with a kick before proceeding further.

I never said anything was wrong with kicks, I simply don't believe a kick will take the place of a solid variable wattage/voltage mod if you're only going to be vaping protanks. If a protank is a stepping stone then by all means go with the mech, it ill save you a purchase later, but like I said, watch to make sure the mech you choose has airflow channels for your protank.

Thanks for the answers so far guys. I know I don't want a mod to blow up on me, so I want to be as safe as possible. My current VV/VW devices work great for me, I just want to try my hand eventually at building my own stuff. I really enjoy tinkering with things and I feel like I would get a certain satisfaction out of vaping something I made myself.
