Did I understand right that adding a kick to a mech mod gives some type of protection and regulation???? I'm not interested in sub ohm or anything as such. I've been pleased that my rebuilds have been on target at 1.6-1.8 ohms. I like the looks of a mech mod, and a button just fell out of my Vamo, and going all the way to a Provari won't be in the budget for while. Just looking for something sturdier.

Yes, adding a kick gives some protection and allows for voltage regulation.
There are more options for tube style regulated mods other than just ProVari though.
Look at the Tesla
$32.15 Tesla Variable Voltage/Wattage Mod - 3.0-6.0V / 3.0-15.0W / 1*18650 at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping
Or the Hybris (a bit smaller)
Hybris Variable Voltage Ecig Mod - Highest Quality Mini Variable Voltage eCig Mod on the Market Designed by AquaVapor LLC
I'm sure that there are many more, but those just come to mind pretty quickly...
Personally I never understood adding the kick to a mech... way to fidgity to adjust the voltage in my opinion...

A mechanical mod with a kick turns the mod into a regulated device, much like a SID or a VAMO including constant power output for the life of the battery and standard battery protection including reverse and low battery shut off. Sounds perfect for your current needs!

One thing, it is more difficult to adjust wattage on it, as you have to open the device to adjust the potentiometer. Also I believe they max out at like 11w.

Yes, a Kick will let you set a certain voltage or wattage (depending on what brand of Kick you buy) and the mech will vape consistently at that level throughout the battery cycle, rather than decreasing in intensity as the battery discharges.

It also does provide a small level of fuse-type protection; probably not as safely as a regulated mod does, but it's better than no protection at all. But it sounds like your builds are about the same as my own, so no worries about amp discharge or anything, just have to make the usual effort to avoid a short.

With a Kick, some length is added, so you'd need an 18650 tube to use an 18490/18500 with Kick; it comes out to the same length. Or, an 18350 plus Kick comes to the same length as an 18490/18500 without a Kick.

Actually they don't have reverse battery protection at all, which Busardo makes a big point of -- if you put your battery in backwards, you'll fry the Kick.

    Folks pretty well covered it.
Main point is not all "kicks" are created equal. An Evolv Kick-1 was 10 watts max, and "step up" only.
The Evolv Kick-2 is 15 watts max, and both "step up" & "step down".
    Kick clones are anyone's guess.

The guys at Evolv say they don't mind the kick being cloned .... they just wish they would do a better job of it.

Thanks for the correction. Evolve doesn't seem to like reverse battery protection!

Yeah, I do recall Busardo making a big point of it, and it's one of his "cons;" he said he even talked to the eVolv guys about it, and there was some reason it's not included, but it was kind of technical; I don't know if Busardo just didn't go into it because it's technical, or maybe I just don't remember it, because it's technical. It might be something as simple as, it would make the kick even longer in the tube, if that protection was present.

Anyway there's a good Busardo video about it, the Kick 2, on YouTube. I have a Smoktech Kick, not the same critter at all, but I watched it just for general info about using a Kick.
