Ok, so my first round whith diy I have decided to have a go with some menthol crystals. I have filled approxamately 75% of my 10mL bottle with finely crushed(mortar & pestle) menthol crystals. The other 25% contains PG. I have heated the bottle in a hot water bath to disolve the crystals. While the mixture is hot its very standard e-liquid looking. After it cools it seems to be forming a giant chunk of menthol at the top of the bottle. I have repeated the process of heating and cooling twice with the same end results. The question is this.... If I add more pg to this batch to allow the rest of the crystals to emulsify where do I know that I have enough(PG)? The only few recipes Ive found using crystals seem to begin the same way that mine did. I am trying to get a concentrated menthol for adding to my base, not to be able to vape it straight. In addition to having something to add to my base I would like to obtain a repeatable process. Thank You for any help in advance.

I use PGA (Everclear) for my menthol crystals since it does seem to keep the crystals from re crystalizing much better than the PG. But hopefully someone that uses PG will stop by and help you with this. Good luck to you.

Edit- You would be much better off getting some PGA to disolve them in IMO. The results are excellent and menthol drops that really pack a punch :)

Salem, Thanks for the quick answer. I live in Pennsylvania. PGA is not a purchasable product in my backwards state. I guess i may have to look into diy something else....Only joking. That would be all i need is to have the atf come& see me because i needed to make pga so that i could make menthol drops...LMAO.. I will keep tinkering whith this though. Thanks Again.

EEEsh, I remember PA and its crazy booze laws from when i used to live in the burgh. Can you get Everclear, there? Or 100 proof vodka? I can't remember what they're called, but i think I remember getting some everclear for a party punch at one of those state licensed booze shops. Of course, that was over 10 years ago, but is it possible now?

I don't think you're going to be able to keep it from recrystalizing unless you add some high proof alcohol. My fave juice vendor who's an amazing mixologist puts no pga in any of her mixes, EXCEPT for her Menthol Moon Drops, specifically for that reason. And it still crystalizes in the bottle, and that's with a vapable eliquid, not the kind of high concentrations you're talking about. I'm thinking if you can't get the high proof alcohol at all, you might have to abandon the crystals and get the menthol drops. Good luck, though! Oh, on the plus side, she does recommend running the bottle under hot water to reliquify once crystals have formed. Maybe you could just do that every time you want to use your menthol mix? But I don't think it'll be possible to stop it from crystalizing again once it cools.

Thanks for the info base, orachel, symphynity. I have since moved my menthol solution to a 30mL bottle, added some more PG, re- heated, allowed to cool and voila... more crystals.... It hasn't stopped me just yet from mixing up a small 5mL batch of12mg test liquid. I decided to begin small, 5 mL of liquid later...with my concetrated menthol at 4% of my total mix strength I seem to have a completely stable product. I have zero clumping in the final product and I am delightd to announce that with all of three inredients I have succeeded in making my first batch of diy eliquid. Now to find a reasonable way to sweeten this up just a little bit.
