I've got those black ones and some trust fire 900mah ones. Would it be a problem usin them??? Or should I order some of those red ones as well????
They do compress the spring more. And won't perform as well. If you want to get the most out of your REO is it best to use the recommended battery. There really is a difference in them.
When my daughter got her first Mini she had some of the TFlames. She kept using them for awhile, even when I told her she needed to get the AW IMR. Finally she used one of mine and saw the difference. Now they are all she wants to use.

I'll give you a mildly dissenting opinion. If you're going to pick a protected li-on 14500 for vaping, then the AW ICR 14500 is the right one to pick. Its performance is very good. I have an AW IMR in my mini right now, but I use the AW ICR's too. They are very good and surpass any and all of the 'xx*fire' batteries for sure.

Please keep in mind when using alternative batteries that the length will vary. Everyone must decide how much they will compress the spring. You might feel comfortable with it's ability to collapse just a tiny bit.

Just some lengths of popular 18650 batteries.

This is a shot of a longer battery, notice how much the spring is compressed.

I like to use the AW IMR for many reasons.
One is the spring has lots of available room to collapse and drop that battery in case of a short.

This really depends on which mini! In the metal REO Mini, I won't use anything but the black AW ICR 14500 because there is more room and the spring is NOT overly compressed. It actually looks like it was designed for the larger 14500 platform. Just wish I could get the Panasonics in something that small. Conversely, in the Mini Woodvil you really shouldn't use anything but a smaller-length offering like the IMR because as Nerak's image demonstrates the fail-safe feature of the spring will be negated and should a short happen there will be no room for the battery to drop when the spring normal would collapse.
The IMR will give a much better kick than the ICR for LR 1.5Ω attys but for 1.8-2.0Ω offerings I see the ICR being perfect. I also like the extra time I get from the ICR as detailed in the accompanied graphic. The crossover in voltage level giving the benefit to the ICR happens at just the 218mah point in the total life cycle(750mah)using just a .75a load.

Now I have a slightly OT question... My Wife currently has a Mini and the Red AW IMR 14500s, so she is good to go when her Woodvil Mini gets here.

On the other hand, I have the Panasonic 18650 2250s for my Grands. Will I be needing the shorter Red AW IMR 18650 1600s for my Woodvil ?

They should fit in the Woodvil the same as they do the Grand. The spring should be compressed the same amount in both. I must say I won't use anything but the recommended. I want as much play in that spring as possible!

Your correct when I built the first mini mods I built it around the protected batteries .At the time this is what we were all using the imr craze hadn't gone into full swing .Many of use ran the mini with protected batteries for some time before making the switch
