Every time I step away from these forums, a lot seems to have changed.

I recently picked up what people seem to call a "mini DID clone", which is I guess a genesis style tank/atty mod.

I'm running into a couple issues, that maybe someone could help me sort out.

1. I made my first wick, oxidized it with a chef torch, did the e-juice burning, wrapped it 4 times with the provided wire (32g kanthal I believe), and sparked it up. I basically just followed the igetcha69 video on the "mini DID clone".

I'm reading 1.1 ohms on the provari, and the vapor production is low, but the TH is high, and it's a bit burnt in taste. I have my voltage at 2.9V.

So, I'm guessing I didn't quite setup the coil correctly. Any suggestions here? I don't see hot spots, or it glowing orange at all. It seems to wick quite well. I can't spot any shorts.

2. I'd like to get a replacement part for the tank section, so I can see how much juice is in there (how do you all check when using the opaque tanks?). Any suggestions on where I can pick one up without having to do all the cutting and such? I ordered some that I saw recommended in another thread and they are far too wide, so the people discussing them must have been referring to a different sized "DID".

3. I noticed the air hole doesn't line up directly with the wick; it's about 90' rotation passed it. Is this is serious problem like some say it is? Should I send it back as defective, or is there maybe a quick fix? In the Igetcha69 video he said his was off a bit (if I'm thinking of the right video), and he said it worked fine anyways.

Well, that's about all I can think of. Any suggestions for any of my questions would be wonderful.

Regards,

I just got one of them myself, and have been trying to figure the darn thing out...probably in the same boat that you are.

I've got a GG Penelope though, so I've got a bit of experience with rebuildables...I know what the bad flavors mean. :)

Typically when you get a burning flavor, or a bad taste, it's because part of the wire is dry, and it's heating itself, not liquid. When that happens, it's very similar to the dry-carto flavor. It'll stop as soon as it's wet again. In the case of a genesis, there are a couple spots that are tough to keep wet, mainly the top between the wick and the center post.

I've started using NR wire for that short bit, it's not for everyone, and NR wire is a bit more expensive, but I'd rather make absolutely certain that that spot doesn't burn on me. It could also be the bottom, between the bottom of the wick and the negative nut. If that's not touching the base all the way from the wick to the nut, it's going to get hot and give a bit of a rough taste. There could also be a stretch of wire anywhere along the coil that's not on/near the wick enough to get the e-liquid on it, or not enough to keep it wet.

I'd also check out the cotton batting method, in the link from the 2nd post here. I'm just giving that a shot, and it seems to be working wonders. I didn't even bother to oxidize the wick, and it works...and it just uses a few strands of cotton from something like a cotton ball.

When I started with rebuildables, I thought I needed a clear window to see the liquid also...turns out that I didn't. You'll know when it's ready for a top-up. The flavor starts to diminish a little, and you'll be going "Gosh...I refilled this last night...why isn't it dry?" Just like anything, once you get the hang of it, it'll become second nature. :)

I have 2 of these and on the first one my airhole was in the same position as yours but my second one lines up. You can either just loosen the top cap 1/4 turn, add an o-ring, or sand down the bottom of it. CAREFULLY. I did this to mine and although it lines up now it is lopsided. Granted I did just hack at it with the first piece of sandpaper I could find. Also break in the mesh for a tank or two at a much lower voltage than usual. The previous post is correct about hotspots - if you aren't getting an error on the provari then your wick is fine. If it tastes burnt or off at all you just have to get the coil right. Most of my problems were solved when I realized I was tightening the nuts way too much. You want to keep the wire in the same position on the top and adjust the top 2 nuts to where they meet the wire, as opposed to just tightening the top down. When you dry burn it you will see if there are any hotspots. Ideally the coils should only glow where they touch the wick and all heat evenly. The mesh/cotton hybrid method works good as well and so does the rolling paper. Good luck.
