Happy Friday!

I'm gonna roll out one more themed quiz, then return to randomness for a little while.

And this week's theme is: Movies That Aren't Really for Kids, but Feature Kids as Main Characters. Sure, that's kinda wordy, but it's also pretty self-explanatory.

So, as usual, there are eight screenshots below, most of which should be fairly recognizable if you've seen the movies. The question is: which of the movies can you identify?

Please answer with movie numbers only, not titles. .

Good luck! :D

As usual, I'll post the answers Sunday morning-ish.

Well, I haven't seen the remake of #6, but I heard it was pretty good. The remake starred #3.

Yeah, they remade #5. I haven't seen it either but the reviews are pretty meh. Well, #6 was a foreign film when Hollywood remade it for American audiences. The remake of #5 was pretty pointless.

For anyone still scratching their head about #5, I always think of this song from the film:

Was the remake of 6 any good? They rarely are, but you never know.
Like bob, I have also heard that the remake of #6 was supposed to be pretty good. I refuse to see it on principle, though. I thought the original was remarkably good, and I was ...... that they had to go and "Americanize" it with a remake.

Which, incidentally, is precisely how I feel about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That first installment of the Swedish trilogy was an excellent film. And while parts 2 and 3 fleshed out and wrapped-up the story adequately, they fell rather short of the quality of part one.

Along those same lines, I see that Spike Lee currently remaking Oldboy. That's very likely to be another Americanization I won't bother to see.

    /end rant :p

I really need to start watching more movies if I ever hope to win this contest. The last time I went to a movie theater the movie was some Stephen King flick about a dog. I remember asking my wife if the dog was the monster and when she said Yes, I figured that I was just wasting my money, so I stopped going to movies.

You know Stephen King has a poor track record when it comes to translating his books to movies. The Shining was a great movie, but King and Kubrick differed on the movie's direction. But, The Stand (tv miniseries) was pretty good. The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and Misery were excellent. :) I lost interest in his books, though. I expect The Gunslinger will probably make it to the screen at some point.

I haven't seen Cujo. I heard it was pretty bad. The kid was apparently kind of annoying. The book was pretty engaging on a level independent of the overall storyline. A straight telling of the story on film would have been doomed to fail.

While I agree in principle that almost all remakes of foreign films SUCK, there are a few exceptions. The key is if they can make the story and/or style their own. Reservoir Dogs, The Departed, and Fist Full of Dollars are a few examples. Maybe Solaris, too? I'm not sure what Lee is planning, and I'm not sure if I'll see it... Oldboy is a magnificent film.

My wife devours Stephen King books, so I really tried to read a couple of them. I just don't like his style of writing, and his subject matter does not interest me. My main objection to his writing is it seems like he never learned how to interact with people so he sits and listens to what people say in a coffee shop and thinks he knows people.

Not to say that my choice of reading material is any better. Give me a boring history book or a book related to Torah or Talmud and I will be happy for hours. Right now I have The Sephardic Heritage Haggadah open on my desk and the night has been flying by as I study from it.

    Hinting and bumping...

#1 shows us that sometimes crop circles really are made by aliens.
#2 features a real life father and daughter, (pictured), playing father and daughter characters who have partnered up as a depression-era con team.
#6 is the story of a couple of kids falling in love. Oh, and one of them is a vampire. :D
#8 explains why it can be "hard to love an adopted child as much as your own."

    Hope these help!

History, eh? Have you seen any of Ken Burns stuff? The Civil War, Baseball, The War (WWII), etc.?

I saw most of the Civil War series. I work 3rd shift, so I don't watch much prime time TV, so most of what goes for popular entertainment is not part of my life.
I also prefer to read. I find that when watching TV it is much too easy to allow my brain to shut down and then I am open to whatever bias the TV producer has. When I read, I am actively involved in what the writer has to say and I am less likely to be swayed by the writer's biases. That is a huge reason I refuse to watch TV news.

More hints if you need 'em:

    1. M. Night Shyamalan again. ♫ ... "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!" ♫
    2. Incidentally, the girl here is a few years older in #5 playing a ringer.
♫ I never feel a thing is real
      When I'm away from you
      Out of your embrace
The world's a temporary parking place
      Mmm, mm, mm, mm ♫
    3. A teenager buys a costume and goes out as a "real-life superhero". He finds he's hopelessly out of his league when he meets up with the girl above, one half of a father-daughter crime-fighting team out for vengeance.
    4. The title refers to a famous reclusive exiled American chessmaster.
    5. An alcoholic pool cleaner is paid to coach a misfit little league baseball team. He recruits help in the form of a tomboy pitcher and a young motorcycle-riding truant.
    6. Swedish horror movie with a different take on the vampire genre. The kid on the right is not really a girl.
    7. This film was parodied in The Simpsons episode "Bart The Murderer" where Bart Simpson is recruited to work as a bartender for the mobster Fat Tony.
    8. A movie in the vein of The Bad Seed and We Need To Talk About Kevin.

    Thank you Caff!
Sounds like 6 & 8 are movies I need to see. I just watched Forbidden Planet (finally), so I'm slowly catching up on my que...
I was totally wrong on #3. I thought it was the Professional for some reason...

    Monsters from the id! :)

I preferred 6 to 8 by a fairly wide margin.
